0xc19a0003 is an ink system failure reported by HP printers that use separate ink tanks and a user-replaceable printhead. The firmware has detected that the ink delivery or printhead electrical check failed during start-up or servicing, so the printer locks printing and scanning until the fault clears. It is most often a printhead that has dried out, a cartridge with an unreadable chip, or ink that has leaked onto the printhead contacts.
What causes it
- Printhead nozzles or electrical contacts are dried or crusted with ink after a long idle period
- One cartridge chip is unreadable or a refilled or third-party cartridge is not being accepted
- A cartridge ran completely empty and air was pulled into the ink tubes and printhead

How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Do a full power reset with the cartridges in place
Leave the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer, then unplug it from the wall. Wait a full 60 seconds, reconnect the cord to the wall first and then to the printer, and turn it on. Many 0xc19a0003 events are a one-off failed servicing check and the error disappears after a clean boot.
Check the ink levels and replace anything empty
Open the ink level display on the control panel or in HP Smart. An empty cartridge can cause the printhead priming cycle to fail and trigger this error. Install a fresh genuine HP cartridge for any colour showing empty or 'unknown', then restart the printer.
Remove the cartridges and clean their chips
Lift the cartridge door, wait for the carriage to centre, and pull each cartridge out. Wipe the small gold chip on the underside with a dry lint-free cloth, look for ink residue, and reseat each cartridge firmly until it clicks. Close the door and watch whether the printer initialises.
Clean the printhead contacts and nozzles
On these models the printhead lifts out after releasing the grey latch inside the carriage. Take it to a sink, rest the nozzle face on a damp lint-free cloth for a few minutes, and gently wipe the copper strip contacts with a lightly moistened cloth. Dry the contacts completely, reinstall the printhead, lock the latch, and put the cartridges back.
Run the built-in cleaning and alignment
Once the error clears, go to Setup, Tools, Clean Printhead and run it twice, then print a print quality diagnostic page. If the error returns mid-clean, the printhead is probably physically failing rather than dirty.
Try a semi-full reset
On most OfficeJet 6500/7500 and Photosmart units press and hold the Back (return) button and the OK/Cancel combination described in the HP support forum for your model to reach the Support menu, then choose Resets, Semi Full Reset. This clears the stored ink system fault without losing network settings on most firmware versions.
Replace the printhead
If the error persists after cleaning, fit a new HP printhead (CD868A or CD869A for the OfficeJet 6500/7500 family, the 564 printhead for Photosmart). Install new cartridges at the same time because a new printhead needs to be primed with ink that has not already been drawn through a faulty head.
