OKI printer says change the image drum

One of the image drums has reached the end of its rated life, and the printer is asking for it to be replaced. On OKI LED printers each colour has its own image drum which is separate from the toner cartridge and lasts considerably longer. Print quality typically declines with streaks or repeating marks as a drum wears out.

What causes it

  • The image drum has reached its rated page count
  • The drum surface is scratched or contaminated
  • Many short jobs have aged the drum faster than the page count implies
  • A previous jam damaged the drum surface
  • A non-genuine drum reporting incorrectly

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Confirm which drum is being reported

Read the panel message carefully, since it names the colour involved. Buying the wrong colour drum is an easy mistake, and on colour models the four drums wear at different rates depending on what you print.

  2. Check current print quality

Print a few pages and look for repeating marks at regular intervals, streaks or a grey background in one colour. If pages still look clean, the message is a life estimate and you have time to order rather than replace immediately.

  3. Order the correct part

Find the image drum part number for your model and the colour reported, which is printed on the current drum and in the printer's documentation. Drums and toner cartridges have separate part numbers and are not interchangeable.

  4. Fit the new drum carefully

Switch the printer off, open the top cover, lift out the old drum with its toner cartridge, transfer the toner cartridge into the new drum and turn its lock lever to the locked position. Avoid touching the green drum surface and keep it out of bright light while fitting.

  5. Confirm the counter resets

Switch the printer on and check the message has cleared. OKI printers normally detect the new drum automatically. If it persists, check the drum is fully seated and the cover is properly closed.

  6. Inspect for scratches after a jam

If quality problems started suddenly after clearing paper, look at the drum surface for scratches or embedded debris. Physical damage means replacement regardless of the counter, since it cannot be polished out.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Is the drum included with new toner?

No. On OKI LED printers they are separate consumables, and the drum typically lasts through several toner cartridges.

Can I keep printing after the warning?

Usually for a while, with gradually declining quality. Repeating marks down the page are the practical signal to replace it.

Why do only some colours need replacing?

Each colour has its own drum, and they wear according to how much of that colour you print.
