Kyocera reports toner empty and stops printing
The machine has determined the toner container has no usable toner left and has stopped printing rather than producing faded pages. Kyocera machines separate the toner container from the drum unit, so this refers only to the toner itself. Printing resumes once a recognised container is fitted.
What causes it
- The toner container is genuinely exhausted
- The container is not seated or its lock lever is not engaged
- A refilled container reports its original chip value
- A third-party container's chip is not recognised
- Toner has settled after a long idle period and is not feeding
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Rock the container to redistribute toner
Open the front cover, release the lock lever, remove the toner container, hold it horizontally and shake it gently from side to side several times, then refit it and engage the lever. This often recovers a few hundred more pages when toner has settled rather than run out.
Check the container is locked in place
Kyocera containers usually have a lever or catch that must be rotated or pressed to lock them. A container that is inserted but not locked will not feed toner and can report as empty. Confirm the lever is fully engaged before closing the cover.
Fit the correct replacement
Find the toner part number on the current container or on the supplies label, and order the exact match for your model. Kyocera part numbers differ between regions and between similar models, and a mismatched container may not be accepted.
Install the new container properly
Shake the new container as the instructions show, remove any seal, slide it into place and lock the lever. Close the cover and let the machine run its toner replenishment routine, which can take a minute or two before printing resumes.
Check the drum unit is not also due
Kyocera separates toner from the drum unit, which lasts much longer. If print quality was poor before the toner ran out, look at the drum life counter in System Menu, since a worn drum will not be fixed by new toner.
Power cycle if the message persists
Switch the machine off, wait a minute and switch it on again with the new container fitted. A latched message occasionally survives the replacement until the machine restarts and re-reads the container.
