Kyocera says add paper in cassette 1
The machine wants paper from the first cassette and either finds none or finds a size that does not match what the job requested. It is common to see this message with paper clearly loaded, which nearly always means the size or type setting for the tray does not match the stock inside it. The job waits until the mismatch is resolved.
What causes it
- The cassette is genuinely empty
- The tray's paper size setting does not match the paper loaded
- The paper guides are not set against the stack, so the sensed size is wrong
- The job requested a media type the tray is not configured for
- The paper level sensor is obstructed or the stack is below the sensing point
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Load paper and set the guides
Pull the cassette right out, fan the paper, tap it square and load it below the fill line. Slide the length and width guides in until they touch the stack without compressing it, since Kyocera cassettes sense size from the guide positions.
Set the cassette's paper size on the panel
After closing the cassette, the panel usually prompts for size and type. Confirm A4 or Letter as appropriate and set the media type to Plain unless you loaded something else. A guide position and a panel setting that disagree produce this message with a full tray.
Check what the job requested
In the print dialog on the computer, look at the paper size and source selected. A document set to Letter sent to a machine loaded with A4 will wait for paper that does not exist. Match the document to the loaded stock or change the stock.
Confirm the tray configuration in System Menu
From the panel, open System Menu › Cassette/MP Tray Settings and check the entry for Cassette 1. Set the size to match the paper and the type to match what you actually use, then exit and resend the job.
Try another source to isolate the fault
Load the same paper into the multipurpose tray and print selecting that source. If it prints, the problem is confined to Cassette 1's settings or sensing rather than to the job or the machine.
Check for obstructions in the cassette
Look for a stray sheet under the paper plate, a loose label, or packing material left from installation. Anything preventing the plate from rising stops the machine sensing paper even when the tray is loaded.
