Kyocera F248 and F24B errors - main board or storage fault

Kyocera F codes indicate a fault detected by the machine's controller, typically involving the main board, its firmware or the internal storage device. The machine usually halts at start-up or resets itself repeatedly rather than reaching the ready state. These are service-level faults rather than anything a user can reconfigure.

What causes it

  • A failing internal hard disk or solid-state storage device
  • An interrupted or corrupted firmware update
  • A main board fault or a loose internal connector
  • A power interruption during a write operation
  • An incompatible or failing optional memory or interface card

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Note the exact code

Write down the full code as shown, since F248 and F24B are different faults despite the similar appearance. Record the model and the serial number from the label as well, because service documentation is model-specific.

  2. Power cycle from a wall socket

Switch the machine off at its main switch, unplug it directly from the wall for two minutes, then reconnect and switch it on. Give it several minutes to complete start-up, since a machine checking its storage can take considerably longer than usual.

  3. Remove optional cards and accessories

Switch the machine off and remove any optional interface card, additional memory or expansion accessory, then restart with the base configuration. If it starts cleanly, refit the accessories one at a time to find the one implicated.

  4. Disconnect the network cable

Unplug the Ethernet cable and restart. If the machine reaches ready without the network but faults once connected, an incoming job or a management tool is triggering the fault, and clearing queues on connected computers is the next step.

  5. Check whether a firmware update was interrupted

If the fault began during or shortly after an update, tell the service technician. Reloading the firmware is a standard remedy for a partially applied update, but it needs the correct file and procedure for the model.

  6. Arrange service rather than repeated restarts

F codes indicate faults the machine expects a technician to resolve. Repeatedly cycling power on a machine with failing storage risks further data loss, including the address book and stored documents.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between C codes and F codes on Kyocera machines?

Both are service-level faults. C codes generally cover mechanical and imaging subsystems, while F codes point at the controller, firmware and storage.

Will my stored documents survive?

Not necessarily if the internal storage is failing. Anything important should be retrieved as soon as the machine is reachable.

Can I reload the firmware myself?

It is not a user procedure on most models, and an incorrect file can leave the machine unusable. Leave it to a technician.
