Ricoh SC 899 - print job or software error

The machine encountered a software error while processing a job and abandoned it, showing SC 899 on the panel. It is one of the more common Ricoh codes and is usually triggered by a specific print job rather than by a hardware fault. Clearing the job and restarting normally restores service.

What causes it

  • A malformed or unusually complex print job
  • A driver mismatched to the machine's page description language
  • Insufficient memory for the job as submitted
  • A corrupt document or damaged embedded fonts
  • A firmware fault triggered by a particular feature combination

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Restart the machine

Switch the main power off, wait ten seconds and switch it back on. SC 899 usually clears on a restart because it reflects a software condition rather than a component fault. Note what was being printed when it appeared.

  2. Clear the queue on the sending computer

On Windows, press Windows+R, type services.msc, press Enter, stop Print Spooler, delete everything in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and start the service. Otherwise the same job will be resent and reproduce the fault immediately.

  3. Identify the job that triggered it

Print a simple one-page text document first to confirm the machine is working, then try the original document again. If only that document fails, its content or the options it requests are the cause and the machine is otherwise healthy.

  4. Try a different driver language

If you are using a PostScript driver, install the PCL 6 driver instead, or the reverse, and create a new queue. Ricoh machines vary in which interpreters are installed, and a job in an unsupported language is a common trigger.

  5. Install the Ricoh universal driver

Download and install the Ricoh PCL 6 universal print driver and add the printer by IP through Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device › Add manually › Add a printer using an IP address or hostname. The universal driver negotiates supported features rather than assuming them.

  6. Simplify the document

Re-export the PDF from its source application, or use Print as image in the print dialog's advanced options. Heavy transparency, unusual fonts and very large images regularly overwhelm the interpreter.

  7. Check the firmware level

Open the machine's web page by typing its IP address into a browser and look at the firmware version, then compare with the Ricoh support page for the model. Interpreter faults are frequently addressed in firmware releases.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Does SC 899 mean my machine is broken?

Usually not. It is most often a job-related software fault that clears on a restart once the offending job is removed.

Why does the same document keep breaking it?

Because the document contains content the interpreter cannot process. Re-exporting it or printing as an image normally resolves it.

Will more memory help?

On models that accept additional memory, it can help with large jobs. Simplifying documents is the cheaper first step.
