Ricoh SC 552 - fusing warm-up error
The machine reports that the fusing unit did not reach or hold its required temperature during the warm-up sequence. It belongs to the same family as the other 5xx fusing codes and is protective rather than diagnostic of a single part. The machine will not print until the condition is resolved.
What causes it
- A thermistor reporting temperatures outside the expected range
- A failed or intermittently failing fusing lamp
- The fusing unit is loose or incorrectly refitted
- Low or unstable mains voltage during warm-up
- The machine is operating in a very cold environment
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Switch off and restart the machine
Turn the main power switch off, wait ten to twenty seconds, and switch it back on. Watch whether the machine gets further through warm-up than before, since partial progress suggests a marginal condition such as supply or temperature rather than an outright failure.
Check the mains supply
Plug the machine directly into a wall socket rather than a strip or UPS, and avoid sharing the circuit with heaters or other high-draw equipment. Voltage dropping during warm-up is a recognised cause of fusing codes that seem to come and go.
Warm the room before starting the machine
If the office is cold overnight, let the room reach normal temperature and leave the machine powered on for an hour before printing. Cold starts extend the warm-up time beyond the window the machine allows.
Reseat the fusing unit after it cools
Wait at least thirty minutes, then open the access door, release the levers, slide the fusing unit out and refit it until it latches on both sides. Confirm the connector at the rear of the unit engages fully as the unit slides home.
Remove paper debris
Check the fusing rollers and the surrounding transport for fragments of paper, particularly if the code first appeared after a jam. Debris interferes with temperature sensing and produces warm-up faults on a healthy unit.
Note the counter and arrange service
Check the fusing unit's page count where the panel reports maintenance items, and record the SC code with the model and serial number. If the unit is near or past its rated life, replacement rather than repeated resets is the sensible course.
