Ricoh SC 542, SC 543 and SC 544 - fusing temperature errors
These service codes all report that the fusing unit's temperature did not behave as expected during warm-up or printing. SC 542 typically means the fuser failed to reach its target temperature in time, while 543 and 544 cover over-temperature and related sensing faults. The machine stops as a protective measure.
What causes it
- A failed thermistor giving incorrect temperature readings
- A broken fusing lamp or heating element
- The fusing unit is not seated correctly after jam clearance
- Inadequate mains supply from an extension lead or shared circuit

How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Perform the standard SC reset
Switch the machine off at the main power switch, wait at least ten seconds, and switch it back on. Many Ricoh SC 5xx codes clear on a restart if the condition was transient, and the machine will run a fresh warm-up cycle.
Plug directly into a wall socket
Remove any extension lead, power strip or UPS from the supply and connect the machine straight to a wall outlet on its own circuit. Fusing units draw a heavy current while heating, and a weak supply is a genuine cause of failing to reach temperature in time.
Let the machine cool before opening
Wait at least thirty minutes after switching off before opening the rear door or handling the fusing unit. The rollers reach high temperatures and the warning labels inside the machine indicate which parts to avoid.
Reseat the fusing unit
Open the rear or side access as your model requires, release the fusing unit's locking levers, slide it out and refit it until both levers latch firmly. Poor seating after a jam clearance is a frequent cause of temperature sensing faults on a serviceable unit.
Clear paper debris from the fusing area
Look for sheets or fragments wrapped around the fusing rollers and remove them carefully in the direction of paper travel. Debris affects temperature sensing and can trigger these codes without any component failure.
Check the fusing unit's page count
Where the panel or the machine's web page shows maintenance counters, look at the fusing unit's usage against its rated life. A unit past its interval should be replaced rather than repeatedly reset.
Record the code and arrange service
If the code returns after a restart, note the exact SC number, the model and the serial number from the machine's label. Ricoh service documentation maps each SC code to a specific component, and repeated resets on a failed fusing unit are not advisable.
