Epson Printer Not Recognized by Your Computer: USB, Network and Driver Fixes

When your computer cannot see an Epson printer, the fault sits in one of four places: the printer itself, the physical or network path between the two, the driver, or the operating system's printer list. Testing them in that order takes a few minutes and avoids reinstalling software that was never the problem.

Quick fixes first

1. Print a status sheet from the printer's own panel: Setup, then Network Settings, then Network Status, then Print Status Sheet. If it prints, the printer hardware is fine.
2. For USB: unplug the cable, plug it into a different port on the back of the computer, and try a different cable if you have one.
3. For Wi-Fi: compare the IP address on the status sheet with what your computer has stored. A mismatch is your answer.
4. Power-cycle in order: router, then printer, then computer.
5. Remove the printer from your computer's printer list entirely, then add it again fresh.

Fix 1: USB connection checks

USB detection failures rarely involve the printer. Work through the physical path.

Use a rear port. On a desktop, ports on the back of the case are wired directly to the motherboard. Front-panel ports run through internal cables that are frequently loose or underpowered.

Skip the hub. Printers draw more current during head movement than a bus-powered hub can reliably supply. Connect directly.

Change the cable. USB printer cables fail more often than people expect, especially where they have been repeatedly coiled. Keep the length under two metres.

Check Device Manager on Windows 11. Press Windows+X and choose Device Manager. Watch the list while you unplug and replug the printer. If nothing appears or disappears, the computer is not seeing the device electrically. If an entry appears with a warning triangle, the device is detected but the driver failed - which is a different and much more fixable problem.

Fix 2: Network connection checks

On the printer panel, confirm the Wi-Fi icon shows connected. If not, run Setup, then Network Settings, then Wi-Fi Setup, then Wi-Fi Setup Wizard, and rejoin the network.

Remember that most consumer Epson models are 2.4 GHz only. If your router publishes one merged network name and steers devices to 5 GHz, the printer may join fine while your laptop sits on a band that cannot reach it in some router configurations. Confirm both are on the same network name, and that neither is on a guest network - guest networks isolate clients from each other by design.

Once you know the printer's IP address, fix it permanently. On the panel go to Setup, then Network Settings, then Advanced, then TCP/IP, and set a manual address outside your router's DHCP range. Alternatively create a DHCP reservation in the router using the MAC address from the status sheet. This removes the single most common cause of a printer that works for months and then vanishes after a power cut.

Fix 3: Add the printer cleanly on Windows 11

Open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. Remove every Epson entry, including duplicates and any entry with "copy 1" or "copy 2" in the name - these accumulate and confuse applications.

Then choose Add device and wait for the search to complete. If the printer does not appear, choose "Add manually", then "Add a printer using an IP address or hostname", set the device type to TCP/IP Device, and enter the address from the status sheet.

If Windows adds the printer but printing does nothing, restart the spooler: press Windows+R, type services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, choose Restart, and try again. Our print spooler error guide covers the deeper cleanup.

Fix 4: Add the printer cleanly on macOS 26 Tahoe

Open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners. Select the Epson and click the minus button to remove it. Then click the plus button, wait for the list to populate, and select the printer - prefer the Bonjour entry over the IP entry where both appear, since Bonjour survives address changes.

In the Use dropdown, pick the Epson driver by name if it is installed. AirPrint works for basic printing on most modern Epsons but does not expose every feature.

Also check Privacy: open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Local Network, and make sure Epson applications are permitted. Since macOS introduced Local Network gating, this has become a leading cause of Epson software failing to find a printer that the system itself can see perfectly well.

Fix 5: Reinstall the full Epson driver

Windows Update sometimes replaces a manufacturer driver with a generic IPP class driver. Printing may still work while scanning, ink levels and maintenance functions stop, and Epson software reports the printer as missing.

To check on Windows 11: open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose Printer properties, and look at the driver name on the Advanced tab. If it reads "IPP Class Driver", download the full driver package for your exact model from Epson's support site, uninstall existing Epson software, restart, and install fresh.

After installing, verify the driver name again. If Windows replaces it a second time, use Printer properties, Advanced, New Driver to force the Epson driver, and consider pausing driver delivery through Windows Update on that device.

Fix 6: Repair Epson Scan 2 separately

Epson Scan 2 and ScanSmart hold their own scanner list independent of the operating system's printer list. Fixing the printer does not fix the scanner.

Open the Epson Scan 2 Utility, choose Settings from the Scanner dropdown, delete the stale entry, then Add the scanner at its current address. Test a scan before moving on. If ScanSmart still cannot find it, reinstall ScanSmart, since it reads Scan 2's configuration when it installs.

Fix 7: Firewall and security software

On Windows, open Windows Security, then Firewall & network protection, then "Allow an app through firewall", and confirm the Epson entries are permitted on Private networks. If you use a third-party suite, check its own firewall rules - the Windows setting is irrelevant once a suite takes over.

To test quickly, turn the firewall off for two minutes on a private home network only. If the printer is found immediately, re-enable the firewall and add proper exceptions rather than leaving it off.

If nothing worked

If the printer will not print its own status sheet, or shows an error code on the panel, the problem is in the printer rather than the connection - see our Epson error 0x97 guide for the fatal error family, since a printer in a halted state cannot respond to discovery at all.

If the status sheet prints, the printer joins the network, has a fixed address, and still cannot be added on any computer, the remaining candidates are the printer's network interface or something structural in your network - client isolation, a double-NAT setup between an ISP router and a mesh node, or a VLAN separating devices. Testing with the printer and a laptop both on a phone hotspot proves which side the fault is on within minutes.
