macOS reports a CUPS filter path failure
The queue window names a specific filter program under the CUPS filter directory and says it failed. That names the exact component that crashed while converting your document for the printer, which is more useful than the generic filter failure message. It is almost always a vendor driver component that is incompatible or missing.
What causes it
- A vendor filter compiled for an older macOS release will not run on the current one
- The filter binary is missing after a partial driver removal
- The filter lacks execute permission following a restore from backup
- A driver for a different model is installed against this queue
- The system blocked an unsigned filter under current security policy
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Note the filter name from the queue window
Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Printer Queue and read the full path shown in the error. The last part of the path usually identifies the manufacturer, which tells you whose driver to remove or update. Write it down before clearing the job.
Recreate the queue as AirPrint
Remove the printer in Printers & Scanners, click Add Printer, select the printer from the Default list and choose AirPrint in the Use menu. AirPrint routes the job through Apple's own filters, so the failing vendor filter is no longer in the chain.
Uninstall the vendor driver properly
Run the manufacturer's uninstaller if one exists, then restart the Mac. Leaving a broken filter installed means it may be selected again the next time you add the printer, which reproduces the error.
Install a driver listed for your macOS version
On the manufacturer's support page, confirm the driver is published for your current macOS release before downloading. A package for an earlier version is the single most common source of this failure after an OS upgrade.
Reset the printing system
Control-click the printer list in System Settings › Printers & Scanners and choose Reset printing system. This removes all queues and their stored driver associations, giving you a clean start. Add printers back afterwards.
Test a simple document
Print a plain page from TextEdit after rebuilding the queue. If simple pages work but a particular PDF still fails, open it in Preview and export a fresh copy, since some filters choke on unusual fonts or transparency.
Update macOS
Open System Settings › General › Software Update and install what is available. Apple updates the printing components with the system, and filter compatibility problems are sometimes resolved in point releases.
