Printer not activated, error code -30 (PDF converter)

This message comes from the Amyuni PDF Converter driver used inside accounting software such as QuickBooks and Sage, not from a physical printer. Code -30 means the driver could not be activated for the current Windows user, usually a permissions or registry ownership problem. PDF creation from within the application fails while ordinary printing still works.

What causes it

  • The Windows user account lacks permission on the driver's registry keys
  • The PDF converter driver was installed under a different user profile
  • A Windows or application update left the driver registered but not activated
  • The user profile is damaged in the section that stores printer settings
  • Multiple versions of the PDF converter are installed and conflicting

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Run the accounting application as administrator once

Close the program, right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator, then try creating the PDF again. The activation step needs elevated rights the first time, and running it once elevated often registers the driver permanently for that user.

  2. Reinstall the PDF converter from the application's own repair tool

Most accounting suites ship a repair or component-reinstall utility for their PDF printing. Use the vendor's tool rather than installing the driver by hand, because it also rewrites the registry entries the driver expects. Restart Windows afterwards.

  3. Check the driver appears in Printers & scanners

Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners and look for the PDF converter entry the software installs. If it is missing, the driver never installed successfully and the repair tool is the correct fix rather than any Windows-side troubleshooting.

  4. Test with a new Windows user account

Create a local administrator account under Settings › Accounts › Other users, sign in, and try the PDF export there. If it works, the original profile's printer registry section is damaged and migrating to the new profile is faster than repairing it.

  5. Remove duplicate PDF converter entries

In Printers & scanners, delete any duplicate copies of the PDF converter, then remove leftover driver packages in printmanagement.msc › Print Servers › your computer › Drivers. Reinstall a single copy through the application's repair tool. Duplicates from repeated upgrade attempts are a common trigger.

  6. Restart the Print Spooler

Press Windows+R, type services.msc, press Enter and restart Print Spooler, then retry. The virtual PDF printer relies on the spooler like any other queue, and a wedged spooler produces activation failures.

  7. Print to a different PDF target as a workaround

While you resolve the driver, use the built-in Microsoft Print to PDF queue from the application's normal print dialog. Layout may differ slightly from the software's own PDF export, but it keeps you working.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Is this my printer's fault?

No. It comes from a virtual PDF printer driver inside your accounting software, and your physical printer is not involved.

What is the difference between -30 and -20?

Both are activation failures in the same driver family. -30 usually points at user permissions, while -20 more often follows a version or upgrade mismatch.

Can I just uninstall the converter?

Only if you never use the application's PDF or email features, since those depend on it. Reinstalling through the vendor's repair tool is the better route.
