Chromebook adds the printer but jobs stay stuck in the queue
The printer is saved and accepted the job, but the document never comes out and the print notification sits without progressing. The Chromebook could reach the printer well enough to queue the work, so this is usually a mismatch in how the job is being sent rather than an unreachable device. Protocol choice and printer readiness are the main suspects.
What causes it
- The printer is showing an error such as a jam, empty tray or cover open
- The chosen protocol is accepted but not properly handled by the printer
- The printer requires authentication or a user code the job does not include
- The document is too large for the printer to process
- A previous failed job is blocking the printer's own queue
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Check the printer's panel
Clear anything the printer reports, such as a jam, an empty tray or an open cover, and refill paper if needed. A printer that has accepted a job but cannot print it will hold the job silently, which is exactly what you see on the Chromebook.
Cancel the stuck job and send a simple one
Open the print notification or Settings › Print and scan › Print jobs and cancel the pending document. Then print a single web page. If the simple page prints, the original document was too complex or large for the printer to handle.
Re-add the printer with a different protocol
Go to Settings › Print and scan › Printers, remove the printer, then choose Add printer manually and set Protocol to IPPS or IPP, whichever you were not using. Enter the printer's IP address from its configuration page. Protocol mismatches produce queued jobs that never print.
Clear the printer's own queue
Power the printer off, unplug it for a minute, then start it again. This discards jobs held in the device's memory, including a stalled one that is blocking everything sent afterwards.
Check for secure print or accounting
On an office printer, jobs may be held until released at the panel with a PIN or badge. Look for a held or secure jobs menu on the device, since the job may be waiting for you rather than stuck.
Print from a different app
Try printing from the Chrome browser rather than a downloaded app, or the reverse. A destination that works in one and not the other points at how the app is generating the job rather than at the printer.
Update the printer's firmware
Open the printer's web page by typing its IP into a browser and check for firmware updates. ChromeOS relies on the printer's IPP implementation being correct, and firmware updates frequently improve it.
Stopping it happening again
When it is not worth fixing yourself
If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I see print jobs on a Chromebook?
In the print notification when a job is active, and under Settings › Print and scan › Print jobs for recent history.
Does switching from IPP to IPPS matter?
It can. Some printers accept both but only handle one correctly, so trying the other is a quick and useful test.
Could the job be waiting at the printer?
Yes, if secure release is enabled. Check the printer's held or secure jobs menu before assuming it is lost.
