Android says "Couldn't print. Try again."
The Android print framework handed the job to a print service and the service reported failure. The message is deliberately generic and covers everything from an unreachable printer to a rejected document. Nothing is queued afterwards, so the job simply has to be sent again once the underlying cause is fixed.
What causes it
- The phone and printer are on different Wi-Fi networks or bands
- The printer is asleep, offline or showing an error on its panel
- The print service plugin is out of date or was disabled
- The document is too large or complex for the printer to accept
- The printer requires authentication that the plugin cannot supply
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Check the printer's panel and wake it
Look for jams, empty trays or cartridge warnings and clear them, then press a button to wake the printer. A printer showing an error will refuse jobs while still being discoverable, which is the most common cause of this message.
Confirm the phone is on the right Wi-Fi
Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet and check which network the phone is on. Mobile data or a guest network will prevent printing even when the printer is a metre away. Join the same network the printer uses.
Update the print service
Open the Play Store and update Mopria Print Service or the manufacturer's print plugin, then open Settings › Connected devices › Connection preferences › Printing and confirm the service is switched on. An outdated plugin frequently fails against newer printer firmware.
Clear the print service cache
Go to Settings › Apps, show system apps, find the print service, open Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. Then reopen the document and try printing. Stale cached printer data produces failures that survive a simple retry.
Re-add the printer
In Settings › Connected devices › Connection preferences › Printing, open the print service, remove the printer if it is listed, then add it again by letting the service search or by entering its IP address. This rebuilds the entry against the printer's current address.
Try a simpler document
Print a single photo or a one-page web article instead of a large PDF. If the simple item prints, the original document is too heavy for the printer to process and should be reduced in size or printed from a computer.
Restart the printer and the phone
Power the printer off, unplug it for a minute, and reconnect it. Restart the phone as well. This clears half-open connections on both sides that generic retry attempts cannot resolve.
Use the manufacturer's app as an alternative
Install the manufacturer's own printing app for your brand and print from within it. Vendor apps often use a different path to the printer and succeed where the system print service fails, which also narrows down where the fault lies.
