ChromeOS says the printer is unavailable

The Chromebook has the printer saved but cannot reach it when you try to print, so it marks the destination unavailable. It generally means the address the Chromebook holds no longer answers, or the printer is asleep or on another network. The saved printer entry itself is intact.

What causes it

  • The printer's IP address changed after a router restart
  • The Chromebook is on a different Wi-Fi network or a guest SSID
  • The printer is in deep sleep and not responding
  • The printer was saved with a protocol it does not fully support
  • A managed Chromebook has printers deployed by policy that are not reachable from your location

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Check which network the Chromebook is on

Click the time in the corner, open Settings › Network, and confirm the Chromebook is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer rather than a guest or mobile hotspot. Printing is local traffic, so both devices must share the network.

  2. Wake the printer

Press a button on the printer so its display lights up, wait a few seconds, then try printing again. Printers in deep sleep often stop answering while still appearing in saved lists.

  3. Remove and re-add the printer

Open Settings › Print and scan › Printers, remove the saved printer, then use Add printer to let ChromeOS find it again. This rebuilds the entry against the printer's current address, which fixes the common case of a changed IP.

  4. Add the printer manually by IP

In Settings › Print and scan › Printers, choose Add printer manually, enter a name and the printer's IP address from its configuration page, and set Protocol to IPP or IPPS. A manual entry with a reserved address is the most stable option on ChromeOS.

  5. Reserve the printer's address

In your router, bind the printer's MAC address to a fixed IP so it never changes. This prevents the saved Chromebook entry going stale every time the router or printer restarts.

  6. Try a different protocol

If IPP fails, remove the printer and add it manually with Protocol set to IPPS or Line Printer Daemon. Some older models implement only one of these correctly, and the wrong choice produces an unavailable destination even though the printer is reachable.

  7. Restart the Chromebook and the printer

Power the printer off, unplug it for a minute and restart it, then restart the Chromebook. This clears stale network state on both devices, which resolves intermittent unavailability.

Stopping it happening again

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Do Chromebooks need drivers?

Usually not. ChromeOS prints over IPP to most modern printers without any driver installation.

Which protocol should I choose?

IPPS if the printer supports encrypted printing, otherwise IPP. Line Printer Daemon is a fallback for older devices.

Why does it work at home but not at school?

School networks often isolate clients from each other, which blocks direct printing regardless of Chromebook settings.
