AirPrint printer keeps disappearing

AirPrint printer keeps disappearing from the Mac

The printer shows up in the print dialog sometimes and is missing at other times, which points at intermittent discovery rather than a broken queue. AirPrint relies on multicast announcements travelling across your network, and anything that suppresses or delays them makes the printer flicker in and out. The printer is usually working the whole time.

What causes it

  • The printer's deep sleep mode drops its network announcements
  • Mesh systems, extenders or multiple access points break multicast forwarding
  • The printer is on 2.4 GHz while the Mac is on 5 GHz with band separation
  • The printer's DHCP lease keeps changing its address
  • A VPN or firewall is intermittently blocking local discovery traffic

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Add the printer by IP address

Reserve the printer's address in your router, then in System Settings › Printers & Scanners click Add Printer, switch to the IP tab, enter the address and set Protocol to AirPrint. A queue built on a fixed address does not rely on discovery and stops the printer vanishing.

  2. Turn off the printer's deep sleep

On the printer's control panel or its web page, reached by typing its IP into a browser, look for Sleep, Power Save or Eco settings and lengthen the sleep delay or disable the deepest mode. Models that switch the network stack off when idle disappear from discovery until woken.

  3. Give the printer a reserved IP

In the router's DHCP settings, bind the printer's MAC address, printed on its configuration page, to a fixed address. Changing addresses are a frequent cause of a printer appearing under one entry and then vanishing when the lease renews.

  4. Put the printer and Mac on the same band and SSID

If your router advertises 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as separate names, join both devices to the same one, or enable band steering with a single SSID. Multicast rarely crosses cleanly between separated bands, which produces exactly this intermittency.

  5. Check mesh and extender settings

In your mesh or extender configuration, look for options named IGMP snooping, multicast forwarding or client isolation. Enabling multicast forwarding and disabling client isolation lets AirPrint announcements reach the Mac from wherever the printer is connected.

  6. Wire the printer to the router

If the printer has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router directly. A wired printer announces itself consistently and stops depending on Wi-Fi sleep behaviour, which resolves the majority of stubborn disappearing-printer cases.

  7. Remove duplicate queues

Delete any leftover entries for the same printer in System Settings › Printers & Scanners, keeping the one you created by IP, and set it as the default. Duplicates from repeated re-adding make it look as though the working printer has vanished.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it come back if I restart the printer?

Restarting makes it announce itself again. That confirms the problem is discovery rather than the printer being broken.

Does adding by IP lose AirPrint features?

No. You can choose AirPrint as the protocol on the IP tab, so you keep the same driverless behaviour with a fixed target.

Do mesh networks really cause this?

Frequently. Multicast handling between mesh nodes is a common weak point for AirPrint and similar discovery protocols.
