Zebra Setup Utilities has been the standard way to configure a Zebra label printer for years: connect it, set the media and darkness, run calibration, send ZPL commands and install the driver. Zebra has rebranded the tool as Zebra Nucleus Connector, so you will find the old name in most existing documentation and the new name on Zebra's site. The mobile versions do the same job over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There is also a legacy iOS app still on the store, so check the version before installing.

Version and licence: Free. Zebra has rebranded Setup Utilities as Zebra Nucleus Connector, so guides written before the change use the old name. The current mobile app is version 3.0.3656 at about 99.8 MB; a legacy iOS app with the identifier id1454308745 also still exists, which adds to the confusion. About 99.8 MB for the mobile app.

What it does

  • Printer connection setup over USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
  • Media and ribbon calibration
  • Darkness, speed and print position adjustment
  • Send raw ZPL commands and test labels to the printer
  • Driver installation on Windows
  • Firmware update delivery
  • Configuration backup and restore between printers

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Open the Zebra printer setup utilities page and download the current Windows tool, which is now branded Nucleus Connector.

  2. Step 2

Install it as an administrator, allowing the driver components when prompted.

  3. Step 3

Connect the printer by USB for the first setup, which is the most reliable route.

  4. Step 4

Open the tool and let it detect the printer; it should appear with its model and connection type.

  5. Step 5

Run media calibration so the printer learns the label length and gap, which prevents most feeding faults.

  6. Step 6

Set the darkness and print speed for your label stock, then print a test label.

  7. Step 7

Configure the network settings if you want Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then reconnect over that path and confirm it still prints.

  8. Step 8

On mobile, install the current app rather than the legacy listing, and pair over Bluetooth.

Which printers it supports

Zebra desktop, industrial and mobile label printers, including the ZD, ZT, ZQ and older GK and GX series.

When Zebra Nucleus Connector (formerly Zebra Setup Utilities) will not work

I cannot find Zebra Setup Utilities

It has been rebranded as Zebra Nucleus Connector. Look for that name on the Zebra printer setup utilities page; it is the same tool with a new name.

Labels feed several at a time or print off the edge

Run media calibration from the tool, which teaches the printer the label length and gap. Also confirm the media type setting matches your stock, gap, black mark or continuous.

Print is too light or too dark

Adjust the darkness setting, and match it to the media. Direct thermal needs less darkness than thermal transfer, and running darkness too high shortens print head life.

There are two versions of the app on iOS

The legacy app with identifier id1454308745 still exists alongside the current one. Install the current version, which is in the 3.0 range, and remove the old one to avoid confusion.

The tool cannot find the printer over the network

Set the network configuration over USB first, then reconnect over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Zebra printers can also print a configuration label showing their IP address if you hold the feed button as instructed for your model.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nucleus Connector the same as Setup Utilities?

Yes. Zebra rebranded the tool, so older documentation uses the Setup Utilities name for what is now Nucleus Connector.

Which iOS app should I install?

The current one, in the 3.0 range. The older listing still exists but is legacy.

Do I need it to print labels?

Not for printing itself, but calibration and darkness settings usually need it, and getting those wrong causes most label printing problems.
