Brother 'Unable to Scan AF': scanner unit fault troubleshooting

What causes it

• The scanner carriage displaced or jammed after the machine was moved
• The scanner transport lock still engaged
• The scanner unit's cable unseated after transport or a knock
• Power cut during a scan or a copy
• Failure of the scanner module or its home sensor

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Power the machine down completely for ten minutes

   Hold the power button until the display clears and unplug at the wall. Ten minutes disconnected clears the stored carriage position and any latched fault. Reconnect, power on, and listen carefully for the scanner carriage travelling under the glass during the first few seconds.

2. Release the scanner lock if the model has one

   Check the left-hand underside of the scanner section for a small slider marked with a padlock. On the large A3 Brother machines this is fitted specifically because the scanner carriage travel is long. Slide it to the unlocked position, then restart.

3. Lift the scanner cover and close it firmly

   Raise the scanner cover until it locks, then lower it in a single controlled motion until it seats. A cover that is a fraction open holds a switch and can present as a scanner fault. Check nothing is trapped underneath, such as an ink cartridge wrapper or a sheet of paper.

4. Check the machine is on a level surface

   The large-format Brother inkjets are heavy and flex if they sit on an uneven desk or across two surfaces. A twisted chassis binds the scanner carriage rail. Move the machine onto a single flat, solid surface and retest, which sounds trivial but resolves a real share of A3 model faults.

5. Clear the automatic document feeder

   Open the ADF cover, remove any original in the rollers, and check the feeder path for torn fragments. Close the cover until it clicks. The ADF has its own sensors and a jammed original there is reported as a scanner-family error rather than a document jam in some conditions.

6. Listen for the failure mode

   On the next boot, note whether the scanner makes any noise at all. Grinding means the carriage is catching mechanically. Silence means the motor is not being driven, which points at the module or its cable. This is the single most useful observation you can make before deciding on repair.

7. Test printing separately if the machine boots

   If the machine reaches its home screen, send a print job from a computer. Knowing whether printing still works decides whether you have a usable printer with a dead scanner or a machine that is out of action entirely, and that decides whether replacement is urgent.
