HP error 0x610000f6 (printer failure, ink system or carriage)

0x610000f6 is a 'Printer Failure' code on the OfficeJet Pro 8600 generation that indicates the ink system or carriage did not pass its start-up check. It is commonly seen after a cartridge or printhead change, after a paper jam, or when ink has collected on the printhead contacts. The printer will not print, scan or fax until the code clears.

What causes it

  • Printhead not latched properly after removal
  • Ink or debris on the printhead and carriage contacts
  • Carriage obstruction or a scrap of paper left after a jam
  • Sticking service station on the right side of the printer
  • Electrical failure of the printhead

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Perform a cold restart

Pull the power cord from the back of the printer while it is on, wait one minute, reconnect and power on. Allow the full start-up routine to finish before judging whether the code has cleared.

  2. Clear the carriage path

Open the cartridge door, let the carriage move to the centre, and check for torn paper or loose objects. Gently move the carriage by hand across its full travel with the printer unplugged to feel for resistance.

  3. Unlock, remove and refit the printhead

Lift the grey carriage latch, remove the printhead, inspect it, then replace it and push the latch down firmly until it clicks. The 8600 family is sensitive to a latch that is not fully closed.

  4. Clean the electrical contacts

With the printhead removed, wipe the copper contacts on the printhead and the pins inside the carriage with a dry lint-free cloth. If there is heavy ink residue, use a cloth very lightly dampened with distilled water and dry everything before refitting.

  5. Clean the service station and wiper

Unplug the printer, slide the carriage left, and clean the rubber caps and wiper blade on the right with a damp cotton swab. Dried ink here prevents the capping that the printer checks during start-up.

  6. Run a semi-full reset

On the 8600 touchscreen press Back four times to open the Support menu, then go to Resets, Semi Full Reset. The printer restarts and repeats initialisation with a cleared fault log.

  7. Replace the printhead

If nothing above helps, replace the 950/951 printhead (HP part CR322A) and install new cartridges. Let the initialisation run for the full 15 minutes.

Stopping it happening again

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Will replacing cartridges fix 0x610000f6?

Rarely. The code is tied to the printhead and carriage check rather than to ink levels. Check cartridges only if the ink level screen shows one as missing or not recognised.

Do I lose my network settings with a semi-full reset?

On the OfficeJet Pro 8600 a semi-full reset normally keeps Wi-Fi settings but clears fax logs and some preferences. A full reset returns everything to factory defaults.

How do I know if the printhead or the printer is faulty?

If the error persists with a known-good or brand-new printhead, the printer hardware is at fault. If a new printhead clears it, the old head had failed.
