HP error 51.xx (laser beam detect or scanner error)
51.xx errors relate to the laser scanner assembly that writes the image onto the drum. 51.1 or 51.10 is a beam detect error, meaning the printer did not receive the laser's timing signal, and 51.2 or 51.20 is a laser scanner error. On colour models 51.2x may identify the colour plane affected. The printer halts because it cannot form an image.

How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Power cycle and observe
Turn the printer off for 30 seconds and back on. Note whether the error appears immediately, during warm-up or only when printing. An immediate error points to a cable or scanner fault, while an error during printing can be a dirty scanner window.
Remove the toner cartridge and look at the laser window
With the cartridge out, look up at the narrow slot where the laser passes through. If it is dusty or smeared with toner, clean it gently with a dry lint-free cloth or a cotton swab.
Reseat the laser scanner cables
Unplug the printer, remove the top cover (on most LaserJet 4200 and 4250 class units it lifts off after a few screws), and reseat the flat cable and power connector on the laser scanner. A cable loosened during transport is a common cause of 51.1.
Check for damage after a move
If the error began after the printer was moved or dropped, the scanner mirror or motor may be damaged. Listen during warm-up for the scanner motor's high-pitched whine; silence or an irregular sound indicates a failed motor.
Replace the laser scanner assembly
Laser scanner assemblies are available for most enterprise LaserJets and fit with a few screws. Follow the service manual to avoid disturbing the mirrors.
Consider the DC controller
If a new scanner still reports 51.xx, the DC controller board that drives it is at fault. This is a workshop repair and usually only worth it on high-end models.
