Mac Printer Driver Download: What You Need on macOS 26 Tahoe (and What You Don't)

On macOS in 2026, printing is driverless by default. AirPrint and IPP Everywhere let the Mac negotiate directly with the printer, which is why adding a printer takes three clicks and no download. You install a vendor driver only when you need something driverless printing does not expose, or when the printer is old enough to predate the standards. This guide covers both, and the cleanup that makes the difference when a queue has gone wrong.

Quick route: try driverless first

1. Put the Mac and printer on the same Wi-Fi network.
2. Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer, Scanner or Fax.
3. Select the printer and set Use to AirPrint or Secure AirPrint.
4. Click Add and print a test page from TextEdit or Preview.
5. Open the print dialog and check for the options you need: two-sided, paper source, quality.
6. Only if something is missing, download the manufacturer's macOS driver.

Why macOS mostly does not need drivers

AirPrint is Apple's driverless printing technology, and IPP Everywhere is the wider industry standard behind it. Both work the same way: the Mac asks the printer what it can do, and builds the print dialog from the reply. Nothing is installed, nothing needs updating, and nothing breaks at the next macOS release.

Apple has been steadily removing the legacy printer drivers it used to bundle with macOS. For modern printers this changes nothing. For a queue that was created years ago against one of those drivers, an upgrade can leave the queue pointing at software that no longer exists, which shows up as a job that completes with no output, or the message Filter failed. The fix is not a download; it is removing the printer and adding it again as AirPrint. When a vendor driver is still worth installing

Where to download, by brand

Always go to the manufacturer's own support site and search by the exact model number on the printer's label. Choose the build listed for your macOS version, and check whether the page distinguishes Apple silicon from Intel.

• HP: HP support. Note that HP Print and Scan Doctor is Windows-only; on a Mac the equivalent setup and cleanup tool is HP Easy Start, which can also remove old HP software before a fresh install. The HP app, still commonly called HP Smart, handles setup, scanning and supplies.
• Canon: Canon support. The IJ Printer Driver plus IJ Scan Utility covers PIXMA and MAXIFY models.
• Epson: Epson support, or run Epson Software Updater, which fetches the current builds for your model rather than leaving you to pick.
• Brother: Brother support. The full driver and software package restores ADF scanning, PC-Fax and secure print.

Installing a vendor driver cleanly

1. Remove the existing queue first: System Settings › Printers & Scanners, select the printer, click Remove Printer.
2. Run the downloaded installer and let it finish. Some packages require a restart.
3. Add the printer again from Add Printer. In the Use menu, the vendor driver now appears by name; select it rather than AirPrint.
4. Open Options & Supplies › Options and tick the hardware you have fitted, such as a duplexer or a second tray. Without this the driver hides those features.
5. Print a test page and check the options are present.

If macOS blocks the installer, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and use the Open Anyway button that appears after a blocked launch, but only for a package you downloaded from the manufacturer.

Local Network permission

Since macOS 15 Sequoia, and continuing in macOS 26 Tahoe, apps need explicit permission before they can discover or contact devices on your local network. Vendor printing and scanning software depends on that discovery.

1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
2. Switch on every app that prints or scans, including the vendor app and any office suite.
3. Quit and reopen the app; the permission takes effect at launch.
4. If the app is not listed, it has never asked. Trigger a print or scan so macOS prompts.

Removing drivers and resetting

macOS has no equivalent of the Windows driver store, so there is no list of installed printer drivers to prune. What you have instead:

• Vendor uninstallers. Most brands ship one inside their software folder in Applications. Use it rather than dragging apps to the Bin, which leaves background components behind.
• HP Easy Start includes an uninstall option that removes HP software and queues.
• Reset printing system. In System Settings › Printers & Scanners, hold Control and click in the empty area of the printer list, choose Reset printing system and confirm with your administrator password. This deletes every printer, queue, scanner profile and print preset on the Mac, so treat it as a last resort and expect to add printers again afterwards.

Older printers on a modern Mac

If your printer predates AirPrint and its vendor no longer publishes a macOS driver, you have three options, in descending order of sensibility:

1. Check whether it supports IPP at all. Add it by IP with protocol Internet Printing Protocol - IPP and Use set to Generic PostScript Printer. Many office lasers from the 2010s work this way.
2. Share it from another machine. A Windows PC or a Raspberry Pi running a print server can present an old printer to the network in a form the Mac understands.
3. Replace it. On a consumer inkjet this is almost always the right answer; the running costs of a decade-old printer usually exceed the price of a current model within a year.

What you should not do is buy a driver from a third party. macOS printer drivers are supplied free by manufacturers, and anyone charging for one is selling you something you either do not need or that does not exist.

Adding a printer by IP when discovery fails

Discovery relies on Bonjour, which can be blocked by a guest network, a VPN or a router that isolates clients. Adding by address bypasses all of that and is the most reliable method on a network you do not control.

1. Print the printer's network configuration page from its own panel and note the IPv4 address.
2. Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer, Scanner or Fax and click the IP tab.
3. Enter the address, set Protocol to Internet Printing Protocol - IPP and leave Queue blank.
4. Set Use to Secure AirPrint if it is offered, or the vendor driver if you installed one.
5. Click Add and print a test page.
6. Reserve that address in your router so the queue does not break later.

Apple silicon and Rosetta

Vendor printer software for macOS is now generally universal or Apple silicon native. Occasionally an older utility is Intel-only and prompts to install Rosetta, which is fine for an application. Printing itself does not depend on architecture because driverless printing is built into macOS. If a vendor installer refuses to run at all on an Apple silicon Mac, the package is too old for your macOS version and driverless is your route.

If nothing worked

If the printer prints from an iPhone on the same network but not from the Mac, the printer is healthy and the Mac's queue or permissions are the problem: remove the printer, check Local Network permission, reset the printing system, and add it again. If nothing on the network can print, treat it as a connection fault and start with printer will not connect to Wi-Fi.

Paying for hardware repair because of a driver problem is money wasted; a bench assessment costs roughly 60 to 120 US dollars or 50 to 100 pounds and will find nothing.
