Support code 6500 is a general internal error that Canon describes only as 'printer error has occurred'. It is typically raised by a fault in the printer's electronics or firmware such as a failed self-test, an unexpected sensor value or a logic board problem. 6502 is a closely related variant on some TS and G models. Canon's documented fix is to restart the printer and, if the error persists, to seek repair.
What causes it
- A transient firmware fault after a power interruption
- Static or a power surge affecting the logic board
- Interrupted firmware update
- Cartridge or print head fault misreported by the firmware
- Logic board hardware failure
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Power off and disconnect
Turn the printer off with the power button, unplug the power cord and any USB cable, and wait at least two minutes. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and turn on.
Remove and reinstall the cartridges
Open the cover, take out the FINE cartridges or ink tanks, inspect the contacts, and refit them. On tank models also reseat the print head. A cartridge that fails its electrical test can surface as 6500 on some firmware versions.
Check for obstructions
Slide the carriage by hand with the printer unplugged and check the paper path. A stalled mechanism during the self-test is occasionally reported with this code.
Try the hardware reset sequence
With the printer off, hold Stop, press and hold Power, release Stop, press Stop five times, release Power. When the printer settles, press Power to turn it off, then on again. This clears stored error flags.
Update the firmware if possible
If the printer reaches a usable state, update its firmware through the Canon PRINT app or the printer's web interface to rule out a known firmware issue.
Test without any cartridges
Power on with all cartridges removed. If the printer shows a cartridge-missing message instead of 6500, a cartridge or the print head is the trigger; replace it.
