Epson error 0x41: paper transport failure fix

What causes it

• Slipping or glazed pickup rollers that no longer grip paper
• Too much paper in the cassette, or a stack that is not squared
• Damp, curled or unusually light paper failing to feed cleanly
• A scrap of paper covering the paper-edge sensor
• Feed clutch or motor wear on a high-volume machine

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Do a full power drain

   Turn the printer off, unplug it at both ends, hold the power button for 30 seconds and leave it for five minutes. The transport watchdog stores its last state, and a drained restart forces the printer to re-read every sensor from scratch rather than resuming a failed feed.

2. Reload the paper properly

   Take all the paper out of the cassette. Tap the stack square, fan one edge to separate sheets that have stuck together, and put back no more than half the cassette's capacity. Slide the edge guides in until they touch the stack lightly. Set the paper size and type on the panel to match what you loaded, since a mismatch changes the feed timing the printer expects.

3. Clean the pickup rollers thoroughly

   This is the single most effective step for 0x41. Dampen a lint-free cloth with water, hold it against each grey rubber roller in the cassette bay and rotate the roller with your finger so the entire circumference is cleaned. The cloth will come away grey with paper dust. Allow ten minutes of drying before you load paper again.

4. Check the sensor area with a torch

   Look along the leading edge of the feed path for a small plastic lever or an optical gap. Remove any fragment of paper, sticker or dust sitting on or near it. Flick the lever with a fingertip to confirm it moves freely and springs back.

5. Test with fresh paper from a new ream

   Paper that has sat out in a humid room absorbs moisture, curls, and feeds badly. Take twenty sheets from the middle of a newly opened ream and use only those for the test. If the printer feeds them without error, your paper storage was the cause and nothing is broken.

6. Try the rear feed slot if your model has one

   Feeding a single sheet through the rear slot bypasses the cassette pickup entirely. If that works and the cassette does not, you have isolated the fault to the cassette pickup assembly, which narrows the repair and tells you whether a roller kit is worth buying.

7. Print an internal page to verify

   Use Settings, then Maintenance, then Print Head Nozzle Check to make the printer pull a sheet on its own. A clean feed there confirms the fix without any driver or network involvement in the result.
