Epson error 0xEA: causes and step-by-step fix

0xEA is a fatal printer error raised when the machine's self-check at power-on or mid-job finds the print head carriage somewhere it should not be. The firmware expects the carriage to reach the far-left home position and cap against the maintenance station; when it stalls short of that, or the home sensor never trips, the printer stops everything and shows the code. It is a carriage-side fault rather than a paper-side one, although a jammed sheet under the carriage causes it just as easily as a mechanical problem.

What causes it

  • A sheet of paper or a photo stuck underneath the print head carriage
  • Dried ink gluing the print head to the capping station after weeks of no use
  • A cartridge not fully clicked in, so it fouls the frame as the carriage travels
  • Packing tape or the orange transport lock left fitted on a new printer
  • Ink mist or a smear on the encoder strip confusing the position feedback
  • A worn carriage belt slipping on the drive pulley

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Power off properly and drain the printer

    Press the power button rather than pulling the plug, so the printer tries to cap the head. Once the display is dark, unplug the cord from both ends and hold the power button in for about 30 seconds. Wait five minutes and plug back in. This resets the carriage position counter, which is what the printer uses to decide where home should be.

  2. Open the scanner unit and look under the carriage

    Lift the scanner section until it holds itself open. Look for a sheet trapped under or in front of the print head, and check for a torn strip along the right-hand end of the travel where the maintenance station sits. Pull out anything you find slowly and straight, never at an angle, so the ribbon cable and rail are not knocked.

  3. Free the carriage by hand

    With the machine unplugged, push the carriage gently from one end of the rail to the other. On a printer that has stood idle for months the head is often stuck to the rubber cap on the right-hand side and needs a firm but even nudge to break free. If it will not budge at all, drip a few millilitres of warm distilled water into the capping pad, wait ten minutes, and try again.

  4. Reseat every cartridge or, on EcoTank models, check the ink lock lever

    Power up and open the scanner unit so the carriage moves to the change position. Lift each cartridge out, check that the underside is not soaked in ink, and press it back until you hear a distinct click. On an EcoTank the ink tube lock lever must be in the printing position rather than the transport position, otherwise the head cannot move freely.

  5. Wipe the encoder strip and the rail

    Draw a dry lint-free cloth along the clear plastic encoder strip that runs the length of the carriage travel, keeping the pressure light. Then wipe the smooth metal rail the carriage rides on with a dry cloth to remove ink and paper dust. Do not oil the rail; Epson uses a specific grease and household oil attracts dust and makes stalling worse.

  6. Remove any remaining transport locks

    If the printer is new, check the carriage area, the cassette and the rear cover for orange plastic locks, foam blocks or tape strips. Epson lists them in the setup sheet, and a single missed tape strip on the carriage produces this code at first power-up.

  7. Run a nozzle check to confirm the head is alive

    Once the printer boots without the error, go to Maintenance, then Print Head Nozzle Check, and print the pattern on plain A4. A complete pattern means the head survived; broken segments mean you should follow up with one head cleaning cycle and a second nozzle check before deciding anything else.

Frequently asked questions

The carriage moves freely but 0xEA still shows. What now?

Clean the encoder strip again and look for a crease or a scratch in it. A damaged strip gives correct mechanical movement with nonsense position data, which reads to the firmware exactly like a stall.

Does 0xEA mean my print head is dead?

Not by itself. The code is about carriage movement, not nozzles. Run a nozzle check once the printer boots to see whether the head is also affected.

Can I use alcohol to unstick the head?

Use warm distilled water on the capping pad instead. Alcohol dries pigment ink harder and can attack the rubber cap and the head's nozzle plate.
