HP error 52.xx (laser scanner motor error)
A 52.xx error means the motor in the laser scanner assembly is not spinning at the right speed. 52.0 or 52.00 is a scanner start-up error, where the motor did not come up to speed in time, and 52.1 or 52.20 is a rotation error, where the motor lost speed while running. The word scanner here refers to the laser scanning mirror, not the document scanner on a multifunction printer.
What causes it
- Worn or dry bearings in the polygon mirror motor
- Loose connector or a damaged cable to the scanner motor
- Toner or dust build-up inside the scanner assembly
- Low mains voltage preventing the motor reaching speed
- DC controller fault
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Restart and listen
Turn the printer off for a minute and then on. Listen closely during warm-up for the scanner motor's whine. A motor that struggles, pulses or stays silent confirms the fault is mechanical.
Check the power source
Connect the printer straight to a wall socket rather than a strip or UPS. A sagging supply during warm-up can prevent the motor reaching speed and produce 52.0.
Let the printer cool and retry
A motor with tired bearings often starts when cool and fails when warm. If the error appears only after heavy printing, the scanner assembly is near the end of its life and should be replaced.
Reseat the scanner motor cable
Unplug the printer, remove the top cover and check the connector on the laser scanner. Push it home firmly. Look for a pinched cable if the cover was recently off.
Replace the laser scanner assembly
On most LaserJets the assembly is held by four screws and two cables. Fit the correct part for your model; on colour printers there may be one assembly per colour pair, so identify which one is reported in the code.
Rule out the DC controller
If the replacement scanner still reports 52.xx, the drive signal from the DC controller is faulty. This is a board-level repair best left to a service centre.
Stopping it happening again
When it is not worth fixing yourself
If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 52 scanner error related to my document scanner?
No. In HP error codes the scanner is the laser scanning assembly inside the print engine. The flatbed scanner on a multifunction printer uses different codes.
Why does 52.0 only happen in the morning?
Cold bearings in the scanner motor take longer to spin up. The error appears at first power-on and clears after a warm restart, which is a classic sign the motor is wearing out.
Can I keep using the printer with an intermittent 52 error?
You can restart and continue, but the motor will fail completely before long. Plan the replacement rather than waiting for it to stop.
