HP error 10.0000 and 10.1000 (supply memory error)
A 10.xxxx supply memory error means the printer cannot read the memory chip on a toner cartridge or imaging drum. 10.0000 refers to the black cartridge; 10.0001, 10.0002 and 10.0003 refer to cyan, magenta and yellow on colour models, and 10.1000 indicates a chip that is missing or unreadable rather than merely returning unexpected data. The printer may still print after you press OK, but supply level reporting stops and on some models printing is blocked.
What causes it
- Toner cartridge not pushed fully home so the chip contacts do not touch
- Dirty or damaged chip contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer
- Compatible or refilled cartridge whose chip is missing, damaged or not recognised by the current firmware
- A firmware update that blocked a previously working third-party chip
- Faulty cartridge memory chip on a genuine cartridge
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Remove and reseat the cartridge
Open the cartridge door, pull the cartridge indicated by the code, and look at the small gold chip on the end. Push the cartridge back in firmly until it stops, then close the door. A cartridge that is not fully seated is the single most common cause.
Clean the chip and the printer contacts
Wipe the cartridge chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Use a flashlight to find the matching spring contacts in the printer cavity and clean them gently with a dry cotton swab. Do not use liquid on the contacts.
Power cycle the printer
Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds and turn it on so it reads the supplies again from scratch. The error should not return if the contacts were the problem.
Try a different cartridge
If you have another cartridge of the same type, install it. If the error disappears, the original chip is faulty. Genuine HP cartridges that fail this way are replaced free under HP's supplies warranty.
Check whether a firmware update caused it
If the error began right after a firmware update and you use third-party toner, HP's dynamic security or chip validation has probably blocked it. Contact the toner supplier for a cartridge with an updated chip, or use a genuine HP cartridge.
Continue printing if allowed
Many LaserJet Pro models let you press OK or Continue and keep printing without supply levels. Use this to finish urgent jobs, but replace the cartridge so level warnings work again.
Stopping it happening again
When it is not worth fixing yourself
If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep printing with a 10.1000 supply memory error?
On most LaserJet Pro models you can press OK and continue. The printer will not show toner levels and may repeat the warning with each job until the cartridge is replaced.
Why did my compatible toner start showing 10.0000 after an update?
HP firmware updates can change how cartridge chips are validated. Older third-party chips may fail the check afterwards. Your supplier may be able to provide a cartridge with a newer chip.
Which cartridge does 10.0002 refer to?
On colour LaserJets the last digit is the cartridge position: 0 is black, 1 is cyan, 2 is magenta and 3 is yellow.
