HP error 50.x fuser error (50.1, 50.2, 50.3, 50.4)
A 50.x fuser error means the printer's fusing unit, which melts toner onto the page, did not reach or hold the correct temperature. 50.1 is a low temperature fault, 50.2 a slow warm-up, 50.3 over-temperature, 50.4 a faulty fuser or power supply problem, 50.5 an incorrect fuser type for the printer, and 50.8 or 50.9 indicate a thermistor or over-temperature condition. The printer stops to prevent damage.
What causes it
- Worn-out fuser that has reached the end of its rated life
- Fuser not seated correctly after being removed
- Low or unstable mains voltage, often from a UPS, extension lead or power strip
- Wrong fuser voltage version installed (110 V versus 220 V)
- Failed low-voltage power supply or DC controller
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Turn the printer off for ten minutes
Switch the printer off and unplug it. Let the fuser cool fully; a printer restarted while hot can report 50.3 again immediately. Reconnect and power on.
Plug the printer directly into the wall
Laser printers draw a heavy current when the fuser heats. A UPS, surge strip or long extension lead can cause 50.1 or 50.4 errors. Use a wall outlet on its own circuit if possible.
Reseat the fuser
On most models the fuser pulls out from the rear after releasing two blue levers. Remove it, check the connectors are clean and undamaged, and slide it back until both levers lock. A fuser that is slightly misaligned will not make electrical contact.
Confirm the fuser matches the printer
A 50.5 error means the fuser installed is for a different model or voltage. Check the part number on the fuser label against the one HP lists for your printer and region.
Check the page count against fuser life
Print a configuration page and look at the maintenance kit or fuser life count. If it is at or beyond the rated life (typically 100,000 to 225,000 pages on office LaserJets), the fuser needs replacing regardless of other symptoms.
Replace the fuser or maintenance kit
Order the correct fuser or maintenance kit for your printer. Fitting is straightforward on most LaserJets: remove the old unit, insert the new one, and reset the maintenance count from the menus if prompted.
Suspect the power supply if a new fuser fails
If a new fuser still produces 50.x, the low-voltage power supply or DC controller is not delivering heating current. This is a workshop repair.
