Xerox error 077-900 - paper jam in the transport area
A sheet has been detected where it should not be in the paper transport, so the machine has stopped and is asking you to clear it. Codes in the 077 range concern paper handling and transport sensors. Often a fragment from a previous jam is still triggering a sensor even though the visible path looks clear.
What causes it
- A sheet or fragment remains in the transport path
- A sensor actuator flag is stuck or obstructed by debris
- Worn feed or transport rollers are misfeeding sheets
- Paper outside the machine's supported weight or size specification
- A tray guide is not set to match the loaded paper
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Follow the panel's jam clearance animation
The machine's display shows which door to open and where to look, and following it in order matters because the sensors are checked in sequence. Open each indicated area and remove paper before closing anything, since a partially cleared path reports the same code again.
Search for fragments with a torch
Look carefully around the rollers and along the transport belt for small torn pieces, particularly where a sheet was pulled out earlier. A fragment the size of a stamp is enough to hold a sensor and produce a jam message with no visible paper.
Check the duplex path and bypass tray
Open the duplex module and the bypass or multipurpose tray and inspect both. Sheets that jam during two-sided printing often stop in areas that are easy to overlook when following only the main path.
Reload paper correctly
Remove the stack, fan it, tap it square and reload below the fill line with the guides touching the edges without squeezing. Confirm the tray's paper size setting matches what is loaded, because a mismatch causes the machine to expect the sheet at the wrong moment.
Check paper specification
Verify the paper weight and type are within the range printed inside the tray or in the machine's documentation. Very light, very heavy, curled or previously printed stock is a frequent cause of transport jams that appear random.
Clean the feed rollers
Wipe the rubber rollers with a lightly dampened lint-free cloth and let them dry before reloading. Dust and paper coating build up on rollers over time and cause slipping, which the sensors report as a jam.
Power cycle after clearing
Switch the machine off, wait a minute and switch it back on so the sensors are re-read during start-up. A code that persists after a thorough clearance and a restart points at a damaged sensor rather than at paper.
