Xerox error 092-651 - ATC sensor fault
The automatic toner concentration sensor reported a reading outside the expected range, so the machine flagged a fault in the toner density control for one of its developer units. It affects colour accuracy and can stop printing depending on the model. Environmental conditions and a poorly seated toner cartridge are common triggers.
What causes it
- The toner cartridge or developer unit is not seated correctly
- The machine has been moved between very different temperature or humidity conditions
- Toner has settled or clumped after a long idle period
- A non-genuine toner with different density characteristics is fitted
- The sensor or the developer unit itself has failed
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Power cycle and let the machine settle
Switch the printer off, wait two minutes, then switch it back on and let it complete its warm-up without sending jobs. If the machine has been moved from a cold store to a warm office, leave it powered on for an hour before printing so it reaches a stable temperature.
Reseat the toner cartridges
Open the front door, remove each toner cartridge in turn, rock it gently side to side to redistribute the toner, and refit it until it clicks. Toner that has settled during a long idle period gives readings the sensor treats as out of range.
Check for a non-genuine cartridge
Confirm every fitted cartridge is a genuine Xerox part with the correct part number for the model. Third-party toner varies in density and magnetic properties, which the concentration sensor is specifically designed to measure.
Run the machine's calibration
From the panel, look for Device › Support or Tools › Calibration and run the colour calibration or process control routine. This re-establishes the reference readings and clears sensor faults caused by drift rather than by hardware failure.
Check the environment
Xerox machines specify an operating range for temperature and humidity, and very dry or very humid rooms push toner behaviour outside it. Moving the machine away from a heater, an air conditioning outlet or a damp store room resolves recurring readings.
Note which colour is affected
The panel or the fault log in the Embedded Web Server usually identifies the developer involved. Knowing whether it is one colour or all of them tells a technician whether to look at a single developer unit or at the shared control system.
