HP Smart Can't Find Printer? How to Finish Setup When the HP App Stalls on Searching

When HP Smart - now also branded simply the HP app - sits on Searching and never finds your printer, the app is almost never at fault. It needs three conditions met simultaneously: the printer actively broadcasting in setup mode, your device on the same 2.4GHz network, and, on a phone, Bluetooth and Location both enabled. Miss any one and discovery returns nothing with no explanation.

Quick fixes first

1. Connect your phone or PC to the 2.4GHz network, not the 5GHz one.
2. On a phone, enable Bluetooth and Location, and grant the HP app both permissions.
3. Restore the printer's network defaults so it starts a fresh setup broadcast.
4. Move the printer within a couple of metres of the router for the pairing step.
5. Disconnect any VPN and turn off the guest network temporarily.

Why this happens

An unconfigured HP printer advertises itself in two ways: it creates its own temporary wireless network, and on recent models it also broadcasts over Bluetooth Low Energy. The app connects to one of those, sends your Wi-Fi name and password, and the printer then joins your network properly.

Three things break that sequence:

The setup window expires. The printer only broadcasts for about two hours after being switched on for the first time, or after a network reset. If the printer has been sitting powered on for a day, that window has closed and nothing will find it until you restart it.

Band mismatch. Most HP consumer printers - DeskJet, ENVY, and many OfficeJet models - have 2.4GHz-only radios. If your router advertises both bands under one name and your phone is on 5GHz, discovery is unreliable at best.

Permissions. Both Android and iOS gate local network scanning and Bluetooth discovery behind Location permission. This is a privacy control, not an HP quirk, but it means an app without Location permission genuinely cannot see anything - and it fails silently rather than explaining why.

Fix 1: Restart the printer's setup mode

Do this before anything else, because a printer outside its broadcast window will defeat every other fix.

• Models with a touchscreen: Settings › Network Setup › Restore Network Settings, or Wireless Settings › Restore Network Defaults. Confirm, and the printer restarts in setup mode.
• Models without a screen (DeskJet 2700, 4100, ENVY 6000 series): hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for about five seconds. The wireless light flashes to show setup mode.
• Some models: hold the Wireless button alone until the light blinks.

The printer now broadcasts for roughly two hours. Complete setup within that time.

Fix 2: Get everything onto 2.4GHz

In your router's app or admin page, look under Wireless settings for either:

• Separate network names per band - add a suffix such as -2.4G to the 2.4GHz network, or
• A Band Steering, Smart Connect or Dual-Band Wi-Fi switch you can turn off for the duration of setup.

Then connect your phone or laptop to the 2.4GHz network, run setup, and revert afterwards. Once the printer has joined it stays on 2.4GHz regardless of what your other devices do.

If your router genuinely offers no way to split the bands - common with ISP-supplied gateways - skip to Fix 5 and set the Wi-Fi up from the printer's own panel.

Fix 3: Fix the phone-side permissions

iPhone and iPad

1. Settings › Bluetooth - on.
2. Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services - on, and set the HP app to While Using the App.
3. Settings › HP Smart › Local Network - enabled.
4. Turn off any VPN, and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address for your home network in Settings › Wi-Fi › your network if setup keeps failing.

Android

1. Bluetooth on, and Location (sometimes called Location Services) on at the system level.
2. Long-press the HP app icon › App info › Permissions › grant Location and Nearby devices.
3. Turn off any VPN and disable Private DNS temporarily if setup stalls.

Location permission is the one people decline out of habit. Without it, the app's search simply returns nothing forever.

Fix 4: Remove the network obstacles

• Guest network. Guest Wi-Fi isolates clients by design, so a printer there is invisible to your phone. Use the main network for both.
• Client isolation. Look for AP Isolation, Client Isolation or Device Isolation in the router and make sure it is off for the main network.
• VPN. Consumer VPN apps route local traffic through the tunnel, hiding the entire LAN. Disconnect for setup.
• Windows network profile. On a PC, set the network to Private at Settings › Network & internet › Wi-Fi › your network › Network profile type. A Public profile blocks discovery.
• Firewall. Pause third-party security software for the setup step, then re-enable it and allow the HP software through.

Fix 5: Skip the app entirely

Two routes work when discovery is impossible, and both are more reliable than fighting a router.

Set up from the printer's panel

On models with a screen: Settings › Network Setup › Wireless Settings › Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose your network from the list and type the password on the printer's keypad. The printer joins directly, no app involved. Then add it in Windows at Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device, or on a Mac at System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.

Set up over USB

Connect the printer by USB, install HP Easy Start or the full software from HP's support page for your exact model, and use its network configuration step to push your Wi-Fi credentials to the printer. Then unplug the USB cable. This is the most reliable method of all when a router cannot be reconfigured.

Fix 6: When the app itself is the problem

If the app crashes, hangs on Preparing, or reports an error rather than simply finding nothing:

1. Force-close and reopen it.
2. Check for an app update in the App Store, Google Play or the Microsoft Store.
3. Sign out of your HP account and back in.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the app.
5. On Windows, run HP Print and Scan Doctor, which repairs the driver and port layer the app relies on.

Model notes and the 123.hp.com question

HP directs users to 123.hp.com for setup. That address is heavily imitated by lookalike sites offering paid "support" - check the address bar carefully, and note that HP's own setup path now routes through the HP app for most models. Regional model numbers also differ: a DeskJet 2720e in the UK and Australia is a 2755e in the US and Canada, and downloading software for the wrong variant produces a package that never detects your printer. After setup: make it stay found

A printer that completes setup and then disappears in a few days has an address problem rather than a setup problem. Reserve a fixed IP for it in your router using the MAC address from Settings › Reports › Network Configuration Page, and raise the printer's sleep timer so its radio stays reachable. If nothing worked

If the printer will not be discovered even sitting beside the router, on a dedicated 2.4GHz network, in fresh setup mode, with permissions granted and no VPN - test its radio. Connect by USB or, if the model has one, Ethernet. A printer that works perfectly wired but is never discoverable wirelessly has a failing or dead Wi-Fi module.

That is a board-level repair on virtually every HP consumer model, and the labour alone typically exceeds the price of a comparable new printer. Parts for DeskJet and ENVY ranges are frequently unavailable outside HP's service channel. The pragmatic answer is bypass rather than repair: a powerline adapter into the printer's Ethernet port gives reliable network printing for a fraction of a repair cost.

Repair is worth pricing on OfficeJet Pro and business models with low page counts, on printers still under warranty - where this is HP's problem - and on Smart Tank models with substantial ink inside. On a brand-new printer that has never been discoverable, an exchange at the retailer is faster than any support process.
