HP Printer Offline? How to Get a DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet or LaserJet Back Online
HP printers show offline more than any other brand simply because there are more of them. The cause is almost always a changed IP address or Windows status polling, not the printer.

HP printers report offline more often than any other brand for a simple reason: there are more of them. The underlying cause is not HP-specific. Your computer stored an address for the printer, the router later handed the printer a different one, and Windows has been knocking on an empty door ever since. Add HP's aggressive power saving and Windows' habit of marking a sleeping printer offline, and you have the two mechanisms behind almost every case.
Quick fixes first
- Open the print queue and untick Use Printer Offline, then cancel every job in the list.
- Print the network configuration page from the printer: Settings › Reports › Network Configuration Page. Note the IP and MAC addresses.
- Compare that IP to the one in Printer properties › Ports. If they differ, that is your fault.
- In Ports › Configure Port, untick SNMP Status Enabled.
- Run HP Print and Scan Doctor on Windows, which does most of the above automatically.

Why HP printers go offline
Three mechanisms, in order of frequency.
Address change. Home routers lease IP addresses. After a lease renewal, power cut, firmware update or router change, the printer can be given a new address. Windows writes the address into the printer port at install time and never re-checks it, so the moment the address moves, the port is pointing at nothing.
Status polling versus sleep. Windows asks each network printer over SNMP whether it is available. HP models drop their network stack into low power aggressively, and a sleeping printer often does not answer. The printer would print if you sent it a job, but the poll times out and Windows reports Offline. This is the classic "offline every morning, fine after I restart it" pattern.
HP+ and Web Services. HP+ enrolled printers require an active internet connection and a linked HP account to operate. If the internet drops, an HP+ printer can refuse to print even from a laptop sitting beside it. This is a design decision, not a fault, and it produces an offline-looking state that no amount of local network troubleshooting will fix.
Fix 1: Clear the offline flag and the queue
Go to Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, select your HP, and click Open print queue. In the Printer menu, untick both Use Printer Offline and Pause Printing. Then cancel all documents - a single corrupt job can hold the queue and keep the printer flagged offline.
If a job will not clear, stop the Print Spooler in services.msc, delete everything in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, and start the service again. Full procedure in print spooler keeps stopping.
If Use Printer Offline is greyed out, Windows genuinely cannot reach the printer. Skip to Fix 2.
Fix 2: Reserve the printer's IP address
This is the permanent fix and the one most people skip.
- Print Settings › Reports › Network Configuration Page from the printer's panel. On DeskJet and ENVY models without a screen, hold the Information button, or press Wireless and Information together, to print it.
- Note the MAC address - twelve hexadecimal characters, sometimes labelled Hardware Address.
- Log into your router and find DHCP Reservation, sometimes called Address Reservation or Static Lease.
- Pair the MAC address with a fixed IP inside the router's range, something ending .200 to avoid collisions.
- Reboot the printer and reprint the configuration page to confirm.
Then point Windows at it: Printer properties › Ports › Add Port › Standard TCP/IP Port › New Port, enter the reserved address, tick the new port, and print a test page.
Fix 3: Stop Windows polling a sleeping printer
Open Printer properties › Ports, select the ticked Standard TCP/IP port, click Configure Port, and untick SNMP Status Enabled. Windows now sends jobs without asking first; the printer wakes and prints.
You lose ink-level reporting in the Windows queue, which the HP app shows anyway. If the Configure Port button is greyed out, the printer is on a WSD port - a common source of chronic HP offline problems. Create a Standard TCP/IP port pointing at the reserved address and use that instead.
Then reduce how often the printer sleeps that deeply. In the printer's embedded web server (type its IP into a browser) or on the panel, look under Power Management or Energy Save and raise the Sleep delay, disable Auto-Off, and enable any "keep wireless on in sleep" option offered.
Fix 4: Use HP's own tools
HP Print and Scan Doctor
Windows only. It tests the connection, restarts the spooler, repairs or recreates the port, clears the queue and can reinstall the driver. It is genuinely effective on offline errors and is the fastest single thing to try on a Windows PC. There is no macOS version.
The HP app (formerly HP Smart)
HP rebranded HP Smart as simply the HP app; both names describe the same software. Open it and check whether the printer shows as connected. If the app reaches the printer but Windows does not, the printer is fine and the fault is in the Windows port or driver - go back to Fix 2. If the app also cannot reach it, the printer is genuinely off the network, and HP Smart can't find the printer covers that case.
HP Easy Start
HP Easy Start handles a clean removal and reinstall in one pass on both Windows and macOS. Use it when the driver is suspect rather than the network.
Fix 5: macOS, including macOS 26 Tahoe
Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners. Remove the printer with the minus button and add it again with the plus button - macOS rediscovers the current address in the process, which resolves most Mac cases outright.
On macOS 26 Tahoe, local network discovery requires per-app permission. Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network and enable the toggle for the HP app and for anything you print from. Without it, discovery silently returns nothing and the printer appears to have vanished.
If the printer list is corrupt, Control-click inside it and choose Reset printing system, then add the printer again.
Fix 6: The HP+ and Web Services case
If your printer was enrolled in HP+ at setup, it needs an active internet connection and a linked HP account to work at all. Check:
- Is your internet connection up? An HP+ printer with a healthy local network but no internet can still refuse jobs.
- Is the printer still signed into its HP account? Open the HP app and check the printer's status there.
- Are Web Services enabled on the printer, under the embedded web server's Web Services tab?
HP+ enrolment also commits the printer to Original HP cartridges. If offline coincided with a cartridge change, the two may be related - see HP ink cartridge problem.
Model-specific notes
| Range | Typical cause | Best fix |
|---|---|---|
| DeskJet 2700, 4100, 4800 series | Weak 2.4GHz radio, deep sleep | Move closer to the router; reserve IP; disable SNMP |
| ENVY 6000, 6400 series | Sleep plus band steering on ISP routers | Split the 2.4GHz band; raise the sleep timer |
| OfficeJet Pro 8000 and 9000 series | Address changes; WSD ports | Reserve IP and use a Standard TCP/IP port |
| LaserJet M100 and M200 series | Deep sleep and SNMP polling | Disable SNMP status; raise sleep delay |
| Smart Tank models | Same as above plus HP+ enrolment | Check internet connection and account status |
Note that regional model numbers differ. A DeskJet 2720e in the UK and Australia is a 2755e in the US and Canada; an ENVY 6020e is a 6055e. Downloading software for the wrong variant produces a package that installs but never binds. Check the HP hub for the right download, and HP printer support for the wider set of HP-specific issues.
If it keeps coming back
Recurring offline is a different diagnosis from a one-off. If the printer works, drops, works again, you have either a changing address or a marginal signal. The reservation in Fix 2 handles the first. For the second, check the signal strength on the network configuration page - if it reads weak, the printer is at the edge of coverage and no software setting will stabilise it. Move it, or use its Ethernet port with a powerline adapter. Full detail in printer keeps going offline.
If nothing worked
Test the printer over Ethernet or USB for a few days. If it is completely stable wired and unreliable wirelessly, the Wi-Fi module is failing - a pattern that develops gradually, with shorter range and more frequent drops before it stops entirely.
Replacing that module is a board-level repair. On DeskJet, ENVY and consumer LaserJet models the labour alone typically exceeds the price of a comparable new printer, and parts are often unavailable. The sensible answer is bypass rather than repair: a powerline adapter into the printer's Ethernet port restores reliable network printing for a fraction of a repair, and on models without Ethernet, a small Wi-Fi bridge does the same job.
Repair is worth pricing on OfficeJet Pro and business LaserJet models with low page counts, on machines still under warranty, and on Smart Tank models with a lot of ink inside. Elsewhere, replacement is usually the rational call.
If you would rather have someone set up the reservation, port and power settings with you instead of working through router menus alone, you can get help from a printer specialist.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my HP printer say offline when it is connected to Wi-Fi?
Offline is a status your computer decides after failing to reach the printer at a stored address. The printer is on Wi-Fi, but your router has given it a different IP address than the one Windows has in its printer port. Reserving a fixed address in the router and updating the port resolves it permanently.
How do I get my HP printer back online in Windows 11?
Open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners, select the printer and click Open print queue. In the Printer menu, untick Use Printer Offline and cancel any stuck jobs. If it stays offline, untick SNMP Status Enabled in Printer properties, Ports, Configure Port.
Does HP Print and Scan Doctor fix offline errors?
Often, yes. It checks the connection, resets the print queue and spooler, repairs the port and reinstalls the driver if needed. It is Windows-only - there is no macOS version, so Mac users should remove and re-add the printer instead.
My HP+ printer stopped working when the internet went down. Why?
HP+ printers require an active internet connection and an HP account to function, by design. When the connection is lost, the printer can refuse to print even from a device on the same local network. That is separate from a normal offline error and resolves when the internet returns.
Is HP Smart the same as the HP app?
Yes. HP rebranded HP Smart as simply the HP app, and both names refer to the same software for setup, printing, scanning and printer management. Older documentation and search results still say HP Smart, which causes confusion, but there is only one application.
