HP Scan and Capture was a lightweight Windows Store app for scanning documents and photos and capturing images from a webcam. It offered simple crop, rotate and save-to-PDF functions for people who did not want the full HP desktop suite. HP has retired it in favour of HP Smart, which absorbed the same scanning workflow along with printing, supplies and setup. If you still have it installed on an older machine it may keep working, but it receives no updates and newer printers are not supported.
Version and licence: Legacy. HP Scan and Capture was a Windows Store scanning app that has been superseded by HP Smart. Do not go looking for a fresh download; install HP Smart instead, which contains the same scanning functions and is the app HP still maintains.
Download HP Scan and Capture
What it does
- Scan from the flatbed glass or the document feeder
- Capture images from a connected webcam
- Basic crop, rotate and straighten tools
- Save output as PDF, JPEG or PNG
- Simple multi-page document assembly
- Touch-friendly interface designed for Windows tablets
How to install it
Step 1
Do not search for a new copy of HP Scan and Capture; it has been retired.
Step 2
Open the Microsoft Store on Windows and search for HP Smart.
Step 3
Install HP Smart and open it.
Step 4
Choose Add Printer and select your all-in-one so both the print and scan components register.
Step 5
Open the Scan tile inside HP Smart and choose Scanner for the glass or feeder.
Step 6
Set the source, colour mode and file type, then scan and save.
Step 7
If HP Scan and Capture is still installed, uninstall it from Settings, Apps to avoid confusion over which app owns the scanner.
Which printers it supports
It supported HP all-in-one models sold up to roughly the mid-2010s, including older DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet and LaserJet MFP devices. Printers released since then were never added.
When HP Scan and Capture will not work
That is expected, because HP withdrew it. Install HP Smart instead, which performs the same scans and is the supported route for current printers.
Windows scan drivers have changed since the app was maintained. Install HP Smart, add the printer there, and let it register the WIA scan components again.
Automatic edge detection in the old app copes badly with modern scan drivers. Set the scan area manually to the paper size you are using, or move to HP Smart which handles this correctly.
Uninstall HP Scan and Capture from Settings, Apps, Installed apps. Only one app should own the scan session at a time, and HP Smart is the one to keep.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still download HP Scan and Capture?
No. HP retired it and it is no longer offered. HP Smart is the replacement.
Was it the same as HP Scan?
No. HP Scan was the desktop program bundled with the full-feature driver. Scan and Capture was the separate Store app. Both have been folded into HP Smart.
My old machine still runs it, should I remove it?
If it works for your old printer there is no urgency, but it gets no security or compatibility updates, so moving to HP Smart is the safer long-term choice.
