One Windows driver that drives most HP printers in a fleet

The HP Universal Print Driver is a single driver package that can print to most HP printers instead of installing a different driver for each model. Administrators deploy it once and it discovers printers on the network, adapts to the capabilities each device reports, and keeps driver sprawl on print servers under control. It comes in a PCL6 edition, which suits general office printing, and a PostScript edition, which suits graphics work and applications that emit PostScript. It is not the right choice for a home all-in-one, because scanning, ink-level detail and consumer features are not part of it.
Version and licence: Free. Published in PCL6 and PostScript editions for Windows. It is aimed at IT departments managing many printers rather than at a single home printer, and it exposes fewer model-specific features than a full-feature driver.

How to install it
Step 1
Decide between PCL6 and PostScript. Choose PostScript only if your applications or workflow require it.
Step 2
Download the chosen edition from the HP Universal Print Driver page onto the machine or the print server.
Step 3
Extract the package. Running the installer with an administrator account is required.
Step 4
Choose Traditional mode for a fixed printer queue, or Dynamic mode if users move between printers.
Step 5
Enter the printer's IP address or hostname when asked, or let the installer scan the subnet.
Step 6
Let the driver query the device so trays, duplexers and finishers are configured automatically. If it cannot, set them by hand in Printer Properties, Device Settings.
Step 7
Print a test page, then check Printing Preferences to confirm duplex and tray defaults are what you want.
Which printers it supports
Covers the great majority of HP LaserJet, LaserJet Enterprise, Color LaserJet, PageWide and OfficeJet Pro business models. Small consumer inkjets such as DeskJet and ENVY are generally not supported and should use HP Smart instead.
When HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) will not work
Bidirectional communication is probably blocked. Open Printer Properties, Device Settings and set the installable options manually, or allow SNMP traffic to the printer so the driver can query it.
Large PostScript jobs on a PCL device, or heavy graphics rendered on the client, both cause this. Try the other driver edition, and in Printing Preferences, Advanced set the print data optimisation option so rendering happens on the printer where possible.
Dynamic mode relies on network discovery, which many segmented networks block. Enter the printer address manually, or switch to Traditional mode and create a normal TCP/IP port queue.
The universal driver deliberately exposes a common feature set. If you need a feature unique to one model, such as a specialist finishing option or a specific colour control, install that model's own full-feature driver for the machines that need it.
Point-and-print restrictions and driver signing policy commonly block this. Confirm the package is the correct architecture, add the print server to the point-and-print trusted server list, and check the client event log for the specific error code.

PCL6 or PostScript, which do I choose?
PCL6 for everyday office documents and the widest device compatibility. PostScript if your design or prepress applications need it, or if your standard workflow already uses PostScript.
Is there a Mac version?
No. The universal driver is Windows only. macOS uses per-model software delivered through HP Easy Start, or AirPrint for driverless printing.
Can I use it at home?
You can if you have a business-class HP laser printer, but you lose scanning and ink-level features. For a home all-in-one, HP Smart is the better fit.
