Printer Printing Slow? Why It Takes Forever and How to Speed It Up
Slow printing is usually a settings problem, not a hardware one. Quiet mode, Best quality and heavy PDFs sent over weak Wi-Fi account for most of the delay.

A printer that has become slow is rarely wearing out. In almost every case one of four things is responsible: Quiet Mode is enabled, the quality setting is higher than the job needs, the document is being rendered inefficiently, or the job is crawling over a weak Wi-Fi link. All four are settings you control, and the difference between the worst and best case is often four or five times.
Quick fixes first
- Turn off Quiet Mode in the printer's maintenance menu or the driver's advanced settings.
- Set print quality to Normal or Standard rather than Best, High or Photo.
- For slow PDFs, use Print as image in your PDF reader's advanced print options.
- Check the printer's signal strength on its network configuration page; move it or use Ethernet if it is weak.
- Turn off duplex for jobs that do not need it - two-sided printing is inherently slower.

Why this happens
Printing has two distinct phases, and they fail differently. Rendering is the conversion of your document into instructions the print engine understands, and it happens either on your computer (host-based drivers) or in the printer (PostScript and PCL). Marking is the physical act of putting ink or toner on paper at the engine's rated speed.
A long wait before anything moves is a rendering problem. A steady but slow crawl once printing starts is a marking problem, which means quality settings, quiet mode or paper handling. Knowing which one you have halves the diagnosis.
Manufacturers' quoted speeds are also measured under specific conditions: draft or normal quality, plain paper, single-sided, simple text. A photo at Best quality on glossy paper on a machine rated at 20 pages per minute may legitimately take two minutes per page. That is not a fault.
Fix 1: Turn off Quiet Mode
Quiet Mode, sometimes called Silent Mode or Low Noise Mode, deliberately slows the carriage and feed motors. It is often enabled by default or switched on accidentally, and it is the single largest speed setting on most consumer inkjets.
- HP: printer panel Settings › Preferences › Quiet Mode, or in the HP app under printer settings
- Canon: Setup › Device settings › Quiet setting, or the Quiet Mode tab in the driver's Maintenance section
- Epson: Settings › General Settings › Basic Settings › Quiet Mode, and also a Quiet Mode checkbox in the driver
- Brother: Settings › General Setup › Ecology › Quiet Mode
Note that some models expose it in both the printer and the driver, and the printer's setting wins. Check both.
Fix 2: Match the quality setting to the job
Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › your printer › Printing preferences and set the defaults you actually want, rather than changing them per job.

Also check the media type. Setting the paper type to a glossy or heavy media makes the printer slow down for drying passes even on plain paper. It should say Plain Paper unless you have loaded something else.
Two more settings to look for in the advanced or maintenance tab: bidirectional printing should be on for speed, and drying time or ink drying wait should be at its minimum unless you get smudging.

Fix 3: Fix slow rendering
If the printer sits silent for 30 seconds or more before the first page, the job is being processed.
Complex PDFs
PDFs with transparency, embedded fonts, vector maps or scanned images at high resolution are the worst offenders. In Adobe Acrobat or Reader, choose Print › Advanced › Print as Image. This rasterises the page on your computer and sends a simple bitmap, which is often ten times faster overall despite sending more data.
Spooling behaviour
In Printer properties › Advanced, choose Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster and then Start printing immediately. That gets the first page moving while the rest is still spooling. The alternative, "Start printing after last page is spooled", is more reliable for very large jobs on flaky networks but feels much slower.
Printer memory
Laser printers render pages in their own RAM. A page too complex for the available memory gets split into bands and processed in passes, which is slow, or fails outright. Entry-level lasers with 32MB or 64MB struggle with full-page graphics. Reducing the print resolution from 1200 dpi to 600 dpi often produces a dramatic speed-up on these machines, with no visible quality loss on text.
Driver choice
If your printer offers both PCL and PostScript drivers, PCL is usually faster for office documents and PostScript is better for graphics work. On Windows 11, if the vendor driver was replaced by the driverless stack after an update, complex jobs may spool more slowly - reinstalling the vendor package can restore speed. Fix 4: Fix a slow connection
Wi-Fi is fine for text and poor for large jobs at the edge of coverage. A printer connected at a low data rate can take minutes to receive a job that would transfer in seconds over Ethernet.
- Print the printer's network configuration page and look for signal strength or link quality.
- If it is weak, try moving the printer, or moving the router.
- If moving is impractical, use the printer's Ethernet port with a powerline adapter. This is usually cheaper than a mesh node and completely eliminates the problem.
- For a single computer, USB is the fastest option of all and removes the network from the equation.
Remember that most printers are 2.4GHz-only, which is a crowded band. Interference from neighbouring networks, microwaves and Bluetooth devices degrades throughput even at good signal strength. Changing your router's 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6 or 11 - whichever is least used nearby - can help measurably.
Fix 5: Physical causes of slow output
- Duplex printing pauses each sheet to reverse it, and on inkjets adds drying time. Expect roughly half the simplex speed. If duplex has stopped working entirely rather than just being slow, see double-sided printing not working.
- Fuser warm-up on a laser adds 10 to 30 seconds to the first page from cold. Disabling deep sleep keeps the fuser warmer but uses more power.
- Heavy or glossy media forces a slower feed rate by design.
- Dirty or worn rollers cause retries and misfeeds that look like slowness. Clean them as part of routine maintenance.
- Head cleaning cycles run automatically at power-on and after idle periods on inkjets. A printer that is switched off between every job spends a lot of its life cleaning rather than printing - leave it powered on and let it sleep instead.
Brand-specific notes
HP
Check Quiet Mode and also the EconoMode setting on LaserJets. HP's driverless setups on Windows 11 can be slower to spool large graphics jobs than the full HP driver - install the vendor package from the HP hub if you print graphics regularly.
Canon
PIXMA models expose Quiet Mode in both the panel and the driver's Maintenance tab. Canon's Maximum dpi setting on photo printing is extremely slow by design; use Standard for anything that is not a display print.
Epson
EcoTank and WorkForce models have a High Speed (bidirectional) checkbox in the driver that is sometimes unticked by default. Tick it. Epson's Quiet Mode also has an intermediate setting that trades less speed for less noise.
Brother
Brother lasers with 32MB of memory slow down badly on full-page graphics. Dropping to 600 dpi in the driver usually restores rated speed. Brother's Sleep Time and Deep Sleep settings also add first-page delay - raise the sleep timer if the printer is used through the day.
If nothing worked
If the printer is slow even over USB, at Draft quality, with Quiet Mode off, on plain paper, printing a simple text file, then you are looking at the engine itself. On a laser, a fuser losing efficiency causes progressive slowdown as the printer compensates. On an inkjet, a carriage belt or encoder problem forces the printer into a slower, more cautious mode - often accompanied by unusual noises, which printer grinding noise covers.
Repair economics here are unforgiving. A fuser assembly on a consumer laser typically costs a substantial fraction of a new machine, and labour on top rarely makes sense outside business-class equipment. If the printer is a workgroup laser with a low page count, get a quote. If it is a consumer all-in-one past warranty, replacement is usually the rational choice - and modern entry-level lasers are considerably faster than machines from even five years ago.

Why does my printer take so long to start printing?
The delay before the first page is rendering time, not printing time. Your computer or the printer is converting the document into something the print engine can use, and complex PDFs, large images and transparency effects make that slow. Try Print as image in your PDF reader, or lower the print resolution.
Does Quiet Mode really slow printing down?
Yes, significantly. Quiet Mode reduces the speed of the print head and the paper feed to lower noise, and on some inkjets it roughly halves output speed. Find it under the printer's maintenance menu or the driver's advanced settings and turn it off when you need speed.
Is a wireless printer slower than a USB one?
For text documents, barely. For large photos, scanned PDFs and graphics-heavy files, wireless can be several times slower, especially at the edge of coverage where the connection drops to a low data rate. Ethernet is the best of both - fast and permanently connected.
Why does my printer pause between pages?
On an inkjet this is usually drying time on a high-quality setting or a bi-directional alignment pass. On a laser it can be the fuser regulating temperature, which is normal on cheaper models during long jobs. Persistent pauses on a laser can also mean insufficient printer memory for the page being rendered.
Will a driver update make my printer faster?
Sometimes noticeably. Vendor drivers handle rendering on the computer rather than in the printer, and newer builds are often more efficient. Conversely, if Windows replaced your vendor driver with the built-in driverless stack, spooling can slow down for complex jobs - reinstalling the vendor package can restore speed.
