The Phomemo app drives the company's small pocket thermal printers, the ones that print monochrome photos, notes and stickers on thermal paper rolls. It handles photo editing, dithering for thermal output, text and journal templates, and printing directly from the phone over Bluetooth. It is a different app from Print Master, which is for the label printers, and Phomemo's own site keeps them on separate pages. If you have an M02 or T02, this is your app.

Version and licence: Free. iOS version 4.0.0. This is the app for the mini and pocket photo printers, specifically the M02, M02 Pro, M02S, T02, M03 and M04S. Label printers use the separate Print Master app, and installing the wrong one is a common mistake.

What it does

  • Print photos, notes and stickers to a pocket thermal printer
  • Photo editing with dithering options tuned for monochrome thermal output
  • Journal and planner templates
  • Text, list and to-do printing
  • Bluetooth connection to the printer
  • Print density adjustment for different paper types
  • Supports the M02, M02 Pro, M02S, T02, M03 and M04S

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Confirm your printer is a mini or pocket photo model such as the M02 or T02, since label printers use Print Master.

  2. Step 2

Charge the printer and load a thermal paper roll with the coated side facing the print head.

  3. Step 3

Install the Phomemo app from the App Store or Google Play, or through the Phomemo app page.

  4. Step 4

Enable Bluetooth on the phone and grant the app Bluetooth permission.

  5. Step 5

Open the app, search for the printer and pair with it.

  6. Step 6

Choose a photo and use the app's dithering preview, since monochrome thermal output looks very different from the screen image.

  7. Step 7

Set the print density for your paper, then print a small test before a long image.

Which printers it supports

Phomemo mini and pocket photo printers: M02, M02 Pro, M02S, T02, M03 and M04S.

When Phomemo (mini photo printer app) will not work

The app does not list my printer

If it is a label printer, install Print Master instead. This app covers only the mini and pocket photo models such as the M02, T02, M03 and M04S.

Photos print as dark blobs

These are one-bit monochrome thermal printers with no greyscale, so photos must be dithered. Use the app's dithering options and preview, raise the brightness and increase contrast before printing.

The printer will not pair

Grant Bluetooth permission and, on Android, nearby-device permission. Remove any old pairing from the phone's Bluetooth settings, then switch the printer off and on so it advertises again.

Nothing prints although the paper feeds

The roll is in the wrong way round. Thermal paper prints only on the coated side, so reload it with that side facing the head.

Prints fade after a few weeks

That is inherent to thermal paper, which darkens with heat and fades with light, heat and time. Scan or photograph anything you need to keep, and store prints away from sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

Which Phomemo app do I need?

This one for the mini and pocket photo printers such as the M02 and T02. Print Master for the label printers.

Why do my photos look so different from the screen?

The printers are monochrome thermal with no grey shades, so images are dithered into dots. Adjusting brightness and contrast before printing helps considerably.

Do the prints last?

Not indefinitely. Thermal prints fade with light, heat and time, so keep a digital copy of anything important.
