Primera Printer Support: PrintHub, BarTender UltraLite and Colour Label Printing (Independent Guide)

An independent guide to Primera printer support: where per-model downloads live, what PrintHub controls, how BarTender UltraLite licensing works, and the label alignment problems that waste stock.

Primera occupies a specific niche: short-run, full-colour label printing on demand. Its colour label printers are inkjets rather than thermal machines, which is exactly the point, because it allows photographic-quality labels on small runs without a commercial print order. That makes Primera popular with food producers, breweries, cosmetics makers, laboratories and anyone who needs a few hundred good-looking labels rather than a few hundred thousand.

It also means Primera support looks different from every other brand on this site. There is no central download hub, the control software matters more than the driver, and the bundled label design software arrives through a coupon rather than an installer. This page maps all of it.

Official Primera support links

Primera organises downloads by model rather than through one search interface, so the fastest route is to go to your model's own downloads page.

Primera software: PrintHub is the important part

PrintHub

PrintHub is Primera's control software for Windows and macOS, and it ships per model rather than as one universal application. It is not an optional extra. Most of the settings that determine whether a label comes out correctly live here rather than in the print driver: print alignment, label stock length and gap settings, sensor mode, ink levels, cartridge and printhead maintenance, and a genuinely useful cost per label estimate. See our Primera PrintHub page.

If you are troubleshooting a Primera and you have not opened PrintHub, you are troubleshooting in the wrong place.

BarTender UltraLite and the coupon

Label design on Primera hardware is usually done in BarTender from Seagull Scientific. BarTender UltraLite is included with the printer, but not in the way people expect: the Primera installer generates a coupon code which you then redeem, and Primera advises downloading BarTender 2022 R8 specifically rather than the latest release, because that version is validated against the coupon and the Primera drivers.

This trips people up regularly. Installing the newest BarTender and then hunting for a licence that does not apply to it wastes an afternoon. Take the version Primera names. Higher BarTender editions, which add database connectivity and advanced automation, are separate paid upgrades bought from Seagull rather than Primera.

Print drivers

The driver handles the mechanics of getting a job to the printer, but on these machines it exposes far fewer of the settings that matter than the driver on an office printer would. Media size, sensor behaviour and alignment are PrintHub territory.

Setting up a Primera colour label printer

  1. Install the driver and PrintHub from your model's downloads page before connecting the printer. Connecting first often produces a partially installed device that has to be removed.
  2. Install the ink cartridges and let the printer complete its priming cycle. As with any inkjet, do not interrupt priming.
  3. Load label stock designed for inkjet printing. Thermal label stock will not work, and general-purpose paper stock will bleed and smear regardless of settings.
  4. Open PrintHub and set the label stock parameters: label length, gap or notch, and the correct sensor mode for your media.
  5. Run the alignment routine in PrintHub with the actual media loaded, not a different roll.
  6. Print a single test label rather than a batch, and adjust alignment in small increments until it sits correctly.
  7. Redeem the BarTender coupon generated by the installer, download BarTender 2022 R8 as Primera advises, and build your label template there.

Primera model families explained

FamilyWhat it isBest for
LX colour label printersDesktop inkjet colour label printers in several widths and speedsShort-run product labels, food, drink, cosmetics and laboratory work
LX with cutter modelsColour label printers with an integrated cutterDie-cut-free labelling and variable-length labels
AP label applicatorsSemi-automatic applicators that apply printed labels to containersSmall production lines applying labels to bottles and jars
Bravo disc publishersDisc printing and duplication systemsArchival, medical imaging and legacy media production

Within the LX range, the number generally indicates print width, speed and ink configuration rather than a different feature set, so a higher number usually means faster or wider rather than more capable.

Ink, media and running costs

Because these are inkjets, the running cost calculation is different from a thermal label printer. Ink is consumed in proportion to coverage, so a label that is mostly white costs a fraction of one with a full-bleed photograph. PrintHub's cost estimation feature is genuinely useful here and worth using before committing to an artwork design, because a heavy background can double your cost per label without improving the product.

Media is the other half. Label stock must be inkjet-compatible, and within that there are matte, gloss and synthetic options with very different ink behaviour and durability. A label destined for a chilled or wet environment needs stock and ink rated for it, and testing a small run under real conditions is far cheaper than discovering the problem after a production run.

Designing artwork that prints well

A large share of Primera complaints are artwork problems wearing a printer costume, so it is worth naming the recurring ones.

Bleed and trim. Die-cut label stock has a physical tolerance, and artwork that stops exactly at the label edge will show a white sliver on some labels. Extend background colour past the label edge in the design so the cut always falls inside the printed area.

Small text and fine detail. Inkjet on label stock spreads slightly. Text below about six points, hairline rules and very fine reversed-out type will fill in. Test the smallest element in your design before approving the artwork rather than after a production run.

Barcodes. Print barcodes at their intended size, avoid scaling them non-proportionally, and leave the quiet zone clear. Then scan the printed label with the actual scanner that will read it in service, not with a phone app, because handheld scanners and phone cameras tolerate very different print quality.

Colour expectations. A photographic label on matte stock will not match the same file on gloss, and neither will match a backlit screen. Print a proof on the exact stock you will use and approve colour from that physical sample.

Support channels and warranty

Primera hardware is usually bought through a specialist labelling or packaging reseller rather than a general office supplier, and that reseller is frequently the better first call. They understand your media, your artwork workflow and your application, which is where most Primera problems originate.

Warranty is registered through Primera and varies by product line. Keep the receipt and record the serial number, and in the UK and Australia your statutory rights against the seller run alongside the manufacturer warranty on outright purchases.

How this site fits

We are independent and not affiliated with Primera. We publish vendor-neutral fixes, link to Primera's own pages for anything that must come from Primera, and never charge to unlock a fix. Everything we have on this brand is collected on the Primera brand hub.

United KingdomUK and European buyers are served by Primera's European operation alongside the main site, and label stock is supplied through specialist converters as well as Primera directly. Media matching matters: Primera colour label printers are inkjets, and using stock not designed for pigment or dye inkjet label printing produces bleeding and poor durability regardless of printer settings. UK statutory rights against the seller apply to outright purchases.
CanadaCanadian buyers order through resellers and specialist labelling suppliers, with downloads from the per-model pages on the main Primera site. Because these are specialist devices rather than office equipment, the reseller who supplied the printer usually understands your application better than general support and is the sensible first call for anything involving media or artwork.
AustraliaAustralian Primera hardware is sold through specialist labelling and packaging suppliers rather than general office channels. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply to outright purchases. Local media supply is the practical consideration: confirm your supplier stocks inkjet-compatible label stock in your roll width before committing to a printer, because media availability constrains these machines more than anything else.

Primera support FAQ

Where do I download Primera drivers and software?

From Primera's own site on the page for your specific model, following the pattern of the model name plus downloads. Primera does not run one central download hub in the way larger brands do; each model has its own downloads page carrying the driver, PrintHub and documentation. Search the exact model name on primera.com and take everything listed for your operating system.

What does PrintHub do?

PrintHub is Primera's control software for Windows and macOS, and it ships with each model rather than as a universal application. It handles print alignment, ink levels, cartridge and printhead maintenance, label stock settings, sensor configuration and, usefully, cost per label estimation. It is not optional on these machines: most of the settings that determine whether labels come out correctly live in PrintHub, not in the print driver.

Is BarTender free with a Primera printer?

BarTender UltraLite is included, and the licence arrives as a coupon code generated by the Primera installer rather than as a bundled installation. Primera advises downloading BarTender 2022 R8 specifically rather than the newest release, because that is the version validated against the coupon and the Primera drivers. Higher BarTender editions are separate paid upgrades from Seagull Scientific.

Why are my labels printing slightly off position?

Almost always the label stock settings and sensor configuration in PrintHub rather than a driver problem. The printer needs to know the label length, the gap or notch position and which sensor mode to use for your stock. Run the alignment routine in PrintHub with the actual media loaded, then print a single test label rather than a batch while you dial it in.

Do Primera printers use ink or thermal printing?

The colour label printers are inkjets, which is what allows full-colour photographic label printing that thermal printers cannot produce. That brings inkjet considerations with it: nozzles can clog if the printer sits unused, cartridges have a shelf life, and label stock must be designed for inkjet printing or the ink will bleed and smear. Print something regularly rather than leaving the machine idle for months.

How do I contact Primera support?

Through the support area on primera.com, or through the reseller who supplied the printer. Because Primera devices are specialist equipment usually bought for a specific labelling application, the reseller frequently understands your media and artwork requirements better than general support does. We do not publish phone numbers because they vary by region and product line.
