Epson error 0x53: scanner mechanism fault fix

What causes it

• The scanner transport lock still engaged after moving the printer
• An original left in the automatic document feeder blocking a sensor
• The scanner carriage stalled on its belt or rail
• The scanner unit or document cover not closed fully
• Failure of the scanner motor, its belt or the home sensor

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Find and release the scanner lock

   Look on the left-hand side or the left underside of the scanner section for a small slider marked with a padlock symbol. Machines that have been moved or shipped often have it engaged. Slide it to the unlocked position, then power the printer off and on so the scanner carriage can run its home sweep.

2. Clear the automatic document feeder

   Lift the ADF cover, which normally releases with a tab at the front left, and remove any original still sitting in the rollers. Pull it in the direction of feed and check the paper comes out whole. Close the cover until it clicks, since a partly closed ADF cover holds a switch open and produces the same fatal error.

3. Power drain the printer

   Turn it off with the button, unplug at both ends, hold the power button for 30 seconds and leave it five minutes. On restart, listen for the scanner carriage moving under the glass in the first few seconds. Silence there means the scanner mechanism itself is the problem; movement followed by an error means it is stalling part way.

4. Check nothing is resting on or under the scanner section

   Take anything sitting on the lid off, open the document cover fully and check the glass is clear. Then lift the whole scanner section and check the printer chassis below for objects that stop it seating. Lower it gently and confirm it settles flush rather than sitting slightly proud at one corner.

5. Clean the glass and the ADF scan strip

   Wipe the main document glass and the narrow strip of glass at the left-hand edge, which is what the ADF scans through, with a soft dry cloth. Dirt there does not usually cause the fatal error, but it does cause the streaked scans that people often notice at the same time and are worth fixing while the lid is open.

6. Try the printer with the ADF empty and the lid closed

   Restart with nothing in the feeder, nothing on the glass and the cover closed. This gives the machine the simplest possible conditions for its self-test. If it boots cleanly now, add one document at a time to find which condition reproduces the error.

7. Test printing separately from scanning

   If the printer boots, send a print job from a computer and separately try a scan from Epson ScanSmart. Knowing whether printing still works decides whether you have a usable machine with a dead scanner or a machine that needs replacing entirely.
