Epson error 0xF3: carriage and drive fault fix

0xF3 is one of the fatal error codes that means the printer's mechanism did not reach a commanded position and the firmware gave up. Compared with the feed-related codes, 0xF3 tends to appear on the larger WorkForce chassis where the carriage has a long travel and the belt has more room to slip or stretch. The printer will refuse all functions, including copying and scanning, until the mechanism completes a clean initialisation sweep.

What causes it

  • A stretched or slipping carriage drive belt on a heavily used A3 model
  • Paper or a label jammed at the far end of the carriage travel where it is hard to see
  • The maintenance box not fully seated, so the carriage cannot cap correctly
  • Debris in the rail or a dried ink ridge that stops the carriage short
  • Failure of the carriage motor or its driver circuit

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Discharge the printer fully before anything else

    Switch off with the power button, unplug at the wall and at the printer, and hold the power button in for 30 seconds. Leave it for five minutes. On the large WF-7000 series this alone clears a surprising share of 0xF3 events, because the code is often the result of a single failed sweep rather than a permanent fault.

  2. Check the maintenance box is properly home

    On WF-7000 and WF-4000 machines the maintenance box sits behind a cover at the rear or on the left side. Pull it out and push it back until it seats with a positive stop. A box that is a few millimetres proud interferes with the capping and purge cycle and can stop the carriage from completing its travel.

  3. Inspect the far ends of the carriage rail

    Unplug the printer, open the scanner unit and move the carriage to the middle. Shine a torch at both extremes of the rail. On A3 models a sheet that has fed skewed can end up folded against the left-hand frame, out of sight from the front. Remove anything found, and wipe dried ink ridges off the rail with a dry cloth.

  4. Test the belt tension by feel

    With the power off, push the carriage slowly and watch the toothed belt behind it. It should be taut and move the carriage without lag. A belt that visibly sags or lets the carriage move a few millimetres before it takes up is worn, and that free play is what produces position errors under acceleration.

  5. Clean the encoder strip along its full length

    Pinch a dry lint-free cloth around the clear encoder strip and draw it along the whole travel, which on an A3 model is longer than most people expect. Ink mist collects at the right-hand end near the maintenance station. Use no liquids and take care not to bend or kink the strip.

  6. Reinstall the cartridges one at a time

    Power on so the carriage moves to the replacement position. Remove and reseat each cartridge, listening for a click, and check the plastic latch on each one is not cracked. A cartridge riding high catches the frame as the carriage accelerates and gives an intermittent version of this fault.

  7. Run a print head alignment as a movement test

    If the printer boots, use Maintenance, then Print Head Alignment. The alignment routine exercises the carriage across its full travel repeatedly, so if the fault is a marginal belt or motor the code will return during the test and you will know the problem is not fixed rather than finding out on a deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 0xF3 and 0xEA?

Both are movement faults. In practice 0xEA is most often a stuck or uncapped carriage on smaller printers, while 0xF3 turns up more on large-chassis models where belt and travel-length problems dominate.

The printer prints a test page then errors again. Why?

That is the signature of a marginal belt or a partially blocked rail. It works cold and fails when the mechanism heats up or accelerates, so keep looking for a physical cause rather than assuming a board fault.

Can a full maintenance box cause 0xF3?

A full box normally gives its own message, but a box that is loose or wrongly fitted can absolutely produce a movement error, so it is worth reseating.
