Epson error 0x10: ink system fault troubleshooting

0x10 is a fatal error that appears when the printer's ink delivery and purge system does not behave as the firmware expects. During start-up and after a cleaning cycle, the pump in the maintenance station draws ink through the head and the machine checks the result; if that check fails, or the pump mechanism stalls, the printer stops with this code. It is the ink-system counterpart to the carriage and feed errors, and it is often accompanied by very poor print quality in the pages printed just before the failure.

What causes it

  • The maintenance box or waste ink pads saturated so the pump cannot move ink away
  • The purge pump seized with dried ink after a long idle spell
  • A cartridge that ran completely empty and pulled air into the ink line
  • A badly sealing third-party or refilled cartridge letting air into the system
  • Failure of the pump motor or the cam that drives it

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

  1. Power drain and restart

Switch the printer off with the power button, unplug it at both ends, hold the power button for 30 seconds and leave it five minutes. Power it on and listen carefully to the boot cycle. A healthy purge sounds like a short whirring and a squelch from the right-hand side; grinding, silence or a repeated retry is the symptom that matters here.

  2. Check the maintenance box

On WorkForce and EcoTank models with a replaceable maintenance box, open the cover at the rear or side and pull the box out. If it is heavy and the absorbent material is dark and saturated, fit a new one. Push the replacement in until it seats fully, close the cover and restart the printer.

  3. Check the ink pad counter if there is no removable box

On models with internal pads instead of a box, install Epson Status Monitor 3 on Windows and look at the maintenance information, or check whether the printer has been warning about the pads reaching the end of their service life. A machine at its counter limit will keep failing the ink system check no matter what else you do.

  4. Replace any empty or suspect cartridges

Open the scanner unit, let the carriage travel out, and remove any cartridge showing empty or unrecognised. Fit genuine Epson cartridges for testing and press each down until it clicks. On an EcoTank, top the tanks up to the upper line, because running a tank dry is the usual route to air in the lines on those models.

  5. Wet the capping station to free a dry pump

With the printer unplugged, move the carriage to the middle and look at the rubber cap on the right-hand side. Put a few millilitres of warm distilled water into the cap with a syringe or a dropper, then leave the printer for a few hours, ideally overnight. This softens dried ink in the pump path and lets a seized purge mechanism turn again.

  6. Run one power cleaning, then stop

If the printer boots, run Maintenance, then Power Cleaning or Deep Clean, once. Print a nozzle check afterwards. Repeating power cleanings back to back dumps large amounts of ink into the pads and pushes the counter towards its limit, which makes the underlying problem worse rather than better.

  7. Decide on the basis of what you heard

If the pump area is completely silent during boot after the water soak, the pump drive has failed and this is a service repair. If it now purges and the nozzle check improves, keep the printer in light regular use for a week to confirm the fix has held.

When it is not worth fixing yourself

If you would rather not work through this alone, a printer specialist can take a look with you on a screen-share and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth saving.

Frequently asked questions

Will resetting the waste ink counter fix 0x10?

Only if a full counter was the trigger, and even then the physical pads still hold the ink. If you reset the counter without changing the pads or box, ink eventually leaks out of the base of the printer.

How long should the distilled water soak be?

Overnight is a good target. A short soak of ten minutes helps a lightly dried cap but rarely frees a pump that has been idle for months.

Can I keep printing if the error clears but quality is poor?

Yes, but run one nozzle check and one normal cleaning, not a chain of deep cleans. Quality that improves gradually with light use is a good sign; no change after two cycles means the head is blocked more seriously.
