The LaserJet Pro P1102w was the wireless mono laser that sat in millions of home offices through the 2010s, and a large share are still in use because the 85A cartridge is cheap and the engine is nearly indestructible. Its wireless setup is dated: it needs a USB cable to a PC for the first configuration, or the old WPS method, and it cannot see 5 GHz networks. HP Smart can still drive it for printing, though not for initial Wi-Fi setup.

Setting up the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w

Connect by USB, install HP's full driver package, and use the wireless configuration utility inside it to push your 2.4 GHz network details to the printer; alternatively press WPS on the router and hold the printer's wireless button. Once connected, add it on other devices by IP address. A slow-blinking wireless light means it is searching; solid means connected.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the toner cartridge and drum unit, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use HP's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
