Epson error 0xE1: how to clear the fatal error

What causes it

• A brownout, surge or power cut while the printer was mid-cycle
• Print head or carriage cable partially unseated
• Ink spilled into the carriage electronics after a leaking or third-party cartridge
• Corrupt firmware after an interrupted update
• Main board or power supply failure

How to fix it, in order

Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.

1. Discharge the printer for ten minutes

   Unplug the printer at both ends, hold its power button down for 30 seconds, and leave it disconnected for ten minutes. Plug it directly into a wall socket, bypassing any extension lead, UPS or surge strip, because a marginal supply through a cheap strip is a real cause of intermittent fatal errors. Power on and note exactly when in the boot sequence the error appears.

2. Disconnect everything except power

   Pull the USB cable and, if the printer has one, the phone line for the fax. Some fatal-looking errors are triggered by a fax line with a fault on it or a USB port supplying odd voltage. Boot the printer standalone and see whether the code still appears.

3. Remove and inspect the cartridges

   Open the scanner unit, take each cartridge out and look at the ink outlet and the chip. Wipe any ink off the chip and off the matching contacts inside the carriage with a dry lint-free cloth. If any cartridge is a refilled or compatible unit, refit a genuine Epson one for testing, because a chip that reports garbage can hang the initialisation routine.

4. Clear the mechanism by hand

   With the printer unplugged, slide the carriage from end to end and check nothing binds. Look under the carriage for paper, and check the right-hand maintenance station for standing ink. Blot up anything wet with kitchen towel and let the area dry before you reconnect power.

5. Check for Recovery Mode

   If the display shows Recovery Mode instead of, or after, the error, the firmware is incomplete. Connect the printer to a computer by USB, install Epson Software Updater, and let it push a full firmware image. This is the one path back for a printer whose update was interrupted, and it must not be interrupted a second time.

6. Test with a different power outlet and cable

   Swap in a known-good IEC power lead if the model uses a detachable one, and try a socket on a different circuit. A printer that boots normally elsewhere had a supply problem, not a board problem, and the fix is on the mains side rather than inside the machine.

7. Judge by consistency

   If the code appears at exactly the same point in every boot with no mechanical cause visible, treat it as a hardware failure. If it appears randomly, keep hunting for a loose cartridge, a wet contact or an unstable mains supply, because those are the recoverable versions of 0xE1.
