Samsung says prepare a new imaging unit
The printer is counting down the remaining life of the imaging or drum unit and is warning you to obtain a replacement before it runs out. Printing continues normally at this stage, and quality is usually unaffected until much later. It is a purchasing prompt rather than a fault.
What causes it
- The imaging unit has passed its warning threshold for remaining pages
- A high volume of short jobs has aged the drum faster than the page count suggests
- A non-genuine imaging unit is reporting inaccurately
- The counter was not reset after a previous replacement
- The unit is genuinely close to the end of its rated life
How to fix it, in order
Work down the list and stop when the printer recovers. The steps are ordered from most likely and least invasive to last resort.
Check the actual remaining life
Print a supplies information or configuration report from the printer's panel, or open its web page by typing the IP address into a browser. This shows the estimated pages remaining, which tells you whether to order now or in a few weeks.
Keep printing while quality holds
Look at recent pages for grey backgrounds, repeating marks at regular intervals or vertical streaks. If output is clean, the warning is advisory and there is no need to replace anything yet.
Identify the correct part
Find the imaging unit part number on the current unit's label or in the printer's documentation. Samsung models distinguish between the toner cartridge and the imaging unit, and on many machines they are ordered separately, so check which one the message refers to.
Install the replacement carefully
Switch the printer off, open the front cover, remove the toner cartridge if the design requires it, then slide out the imaging unit. Fit the new one without touching the green drum surface and without leaving it exposed to bright light, then refit the cartridge and close the cover.
Confirm the counter resets
Switch the printer on and check that the warning has cleared. Most models detect the new unit automatically. If the message persists, look on the panel for a supplies or maintenance reset option for the imaging unit.
Look for a scratched drum after a jam
If quality problems appeared suddenly rather than gradually, inspect the drum surface for scratches or embedded debris. Physical damage means replacing the unit regardless of what the counter says.
