SELPHY Photo Layout is the companion app for Canon's SELPHY range of compact dye-sublimation and inkjet photo printers. It handles the wireless connection to the printer, arranges photos into layouts such as multi-up sheets, ID photos, index prints and square formats, and applies frames, stamps and simple corrections before printing. Because SELPHY printers use fixed media sizes and cartridge kits, the app is built around those sizes rather than around general paper handling. It supports the CP series, the QX20 and the SQUARE QX10.

Version and licence: Free. iOS version 4.3.10 at about 92.9 MB. Built specifically for SELPHY compact photo printers rather than for PIXMA inkjets. About 92.9 MB on iOS.

What it does

  • Direct wireless connection to the SELPHY printer without a router
  • Layouts for multiple photos on one sheet, index prints and ID photos
  • Square-format layouts for the SQUARE QX printers
  • Frames, stamps, text and simple colour correction
  • Shuffle print that arranges a batch of photos automatically
  • Prints from the phone gallery or from cloud sources

How to install it

  1. Step 1

Load the correct paper and ink cassette for your SELPHY model and switch it on.

  2. Step 2

Install SELPHY Photo Layout from the App Store or Google Play.

  3. Step 3

On the printer, open the Wi-Fi settings and note the network name and password it displays, or enable its direct connection mode.

  4. Step 4

On the phone, join that printer network in the system Wi-Fi settings, or let the app do it if it offers to.

  5. Step 5

Open the app, allow the local network permission, and choose your printer when it appears.

  6. Step 6

Pick photos, choose a layout that matches the loaded paper size, and adjust the crop.

  7. Step 7

Tap Print and keep the space behind the printer clear, since SELPHY models pass the paper back and forth several times per print.

Which printers it supports

SELPHY CP1500, CP1300, CP1200, CP910 and CP900 compact photo printers, plus the SELPHY QX20 and SELPHY SQUARE QX10.

When SELPHY Photo Layout will not work

The app cannot see the printer

SELPHY printers usually create their own Wi-Fi network. Join it from the phone's Wi-Fi settings using the password shown on the printer screen, and grant the app local network permission. The phone loses internet access while connected this way.

Printing stops part way with a paper error

SELPHY dye-sublimation printers feed the sheet in and out several times, so leave at least the length of a sheet of clear space behind the printer. Also check that the paper cassette and the ink cassette are the matching kit for your model.

Colours look flat or too warm

Turn off any filters in the app and print once with no correction as a reference. Dye-sublimation output looks different from a screen, and the protective overcoat layer slightly changes the finish. Avoid double-correcting in both the phone photo app and the print app.

The printer prints but leaves a white border I did not want

Choose the borderless layout option in the app and make sure the layout you picked matches the loaded media size. Postcard size and card size use different cassettes and different layout choices.

I cannot connect while also staying on my home Wi-Fi

Some SELPHY models can join an existing network instead of creating their own. In the printer's Wi-Fi menu choose the option to connect to an access point, enter your home network details, then reconnect the phone to that same network.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Canon PRINT instead?

Canon PRINT covers SELPHY too, but Photo Layout has the layout templates and square formats designed for these printers.

Does it work with the SQUARE QX10?

Yes, and it includes square layouts built for that printer's media.

Do I need internet access to print?

No. The usual setup connects the phone directly to the printer's own network, which works without internet.
