The practical consequence for owners is simple but badly signposted: you look for Samsung printer drivers on support.hp.com, not on any Samsung site.

The full driver and software package for a given Samsung model is the right choice for a single machine, particularly a multifunction one, because it includes the scan driver as well as the print driver. HP retained a substantial part of the catalogue, including current Windows builds for many popular models.

It is the right tool for a print server, a Group Policy deployment or an office with several Samsung machines, and the wrong tool when you need scanning from one multifunction unit. Class drivers as a fallback

Samsung lasers speak standard page description languages, which is why they age well. If no current driver exists for your model, add the printer manually in Windows and choose a generic PCL6 or PostScript class driver, or on macOS select Generic PostScript Printer. You get printing, duplex and tray selection. You generally do not get scanning or accurate toner reporting.

Mobile printing

Samsung's own printer apps and cloud services were retired. Use AirPrint from iPhone and iPad, Mopria Print Service on Android, or HP Smart on models HP has brought into its app. For most Samsung lasers, AirPrint or Mopria is both the simplest and the most durable answer.

Setting up or re-adding a Samsung printer

1. Print a configuration or network report from the printer panel, or hold the WPS or Stop button for several seconds on a button-only model, and note the IPv4 address.
2. Reserve that address in your router so it cannot change. This single step prevents most future offline problems.
3. For wireless setup on a screenless model, use the WPS button pairing or connect by USB once and configure wireless through the driver utility.
4. Check the band. Samsung wireless lasers are 2.4 GHz only, so a merged 2.4/5 GHz network name will stop the printer from finding your network.
5. On the computer, add the printer using a TCP/IP port pointed at the reserved address rather than using automatic discovery.
6. Install the model package from HP if you need scanning; otherwise a class driver is sufficient and more durable across operating system upgrades.
7. Open the printer's embedded web server in a browser at its IP address and set an administrator password.

Toner, running costs and why these machines survive

Samsung lasers are among the cheapest mainstream machines to run, and that is the main reason so many are still working a decade after purchase. The MLT-D101, MLT-D111 and MLT-D116 mono codes are made by many compatible manufacturers, so cartridge prices are low and supply is stable. Colour CLT cartridges cost more and colour machines also use a separate imaging unit and waste toner container, which changes the maths considerably.

Because Samsung-branded toner has largely gone, compatibles are effectively the only market, and the usual caution about third-party supplies applies differently here. Buy from a supplier with a returns policy, test one cartridge, and keep the packaging until several hundred pages have printed. Our neutral guidance is in third-party ink and toner.

Is a Samsung laser worth keeping?

More often than people expect, yes. Samsung mono lasers were built to a simple design with few consumable parts, and the two components that usually fail first, the pickup roller and the toner cartridge, are both cheap and widely available. A machine printing a few hundred pages a month with no marks on the page and no repeated jams is doing its job, and replacing it buys you nothing except a newer driver situation.

The arguments for replacement are narrower but real. A colour CLP or CLX machine with a failing imaging unit is usually not worth the parts, because colour consumables are expensive relative to a modern entry colour laser. A multifunction machine whose scanner no longer works on your current operating system is also a strong replacement case, because scanning is the one function a generic driver cannot substitute. And any machine on an office network that stores credentials in its scan settings is a security argument as much as a printing one.

Firmware, security and warranty

Firmware for Samsung printers is effectively frozen at whatever HP hosts. There will be no meaningful further development. On an office network that matters, because these machines expose web interfaces and scan-to-email settings.

Warranty is not a practical route; Samsung printer warranties expired long before the HP transfer completed for almost all units. Treat these as run-to-failure machines that happen to run for a very long time.
