Smart Device Connector is Ricoh's mobile app for working with its printers and multifunction devices from a phone. It prints documents and photos, scans and copies through the device, and can pull the device's address book and fax functions where those are enabled. Connection is by network, QR code or NFC tag depending on the model and panel. It is the replacement for the older Smart Device Print and Scan app, which Ricoh discontinued and pulled from the app stores, so anyone following an older guide should install this one instead.

How to install it
Step 1
Install RICOH Smart Device Connector from the App Store or Google Play.
Step 2
Connect the phone to the same network as the device, or enable NFC if you plan to tap the panel.
Step 3
Open the app and allow the local network permission, plus NFC or camera permission if you will use tags or QR codes.
Step 4
Choose to add a device and either scan the QR code on the panel, tap the NFC tag, or enter the IP address.
Step 5
Enter any user code or login the device requires.
Step 6
Confirm the device status appears in the app, which proves the connection.
Step 7
Print a test document, then try a scan if the device is a multifunction model.
Which printers it supports
Ricoh multifunction devices and printers in the IM, IM C, MP and SP ranges that support mobile connectivity, plus many rebadged Ricoh devices sold under partner brands.
When RICOH Smart Device Connector will not work
That app was discontinued and removed from both app stores. Install RICOH Smart Device Connector instead, which is its replacement.
Grant the local network permission and confirm the phone is on the same subnet as the printer. If discovery is blocked, add the device by IP address, or use the QR code shown on the panel.
Those functions must be enabled for mobile clients on the device, which is an administrator setting in Web Image Monitor. On managed fleets they are often disabled by default.
Ricoh devices often require a user code for accounting. Enter it in the app's device settings, matching the code your administrator issued.
NFC needs to be enabled on the phone and the device must have an NFC tag fitted, which is optional hardware on some models. Fall back to the QR code or manual IP entry.

Is this the same as Smart Device Print and Scan?
No, it is the replacement. The older app is discontinued and no longer available in the app stores.
Do I need it if AirPrint works?
Not for simple printing. The Ricoh app adds scanning, copying, faxing and device settings that AirPrint does not cover.
What is a user code for?
It identifies you to the device for accounting. Without it, many Ricoh devices silently discard jobs.
