An EcoTank that has sat unused for weeks prints faded, streaky or blank pages because ink has dried in the nozzles, not because it has run out. The fix is a sequence, and the order matters: nozzle check, one cleaning, rest, check again, and only escalate if that fails. Cleaning repeatedly without checking in between is the mistake that wastes the most ink and fills the maintenance box fastest.
Quick fixes first
- Check the physical ink levels in the tank windows on the front. Refill any tank below the lower line before cleaning anything.
- Print a nozzle check: on the panel go to Settings › Maintenance › Print Head Nozzle Check, or use Epson Smart Panel.
- Run one head cleaning cycle from the same Maintenance menu.
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then print another nozzle check and compare.
- If the pattern improved, repeat once. If it is unchanged, stop and move to power cleaning or a soak.
- Leave the printer switched on and plugged in overnight; capillary action alone clears some partial blocks.
Why idle ink-tank printers clog
An inkjet printhead has hundreds of nozzles per colour, each a fraction of a hair's width. Between jobs the head parks on a rubber cap that seals the nozzle plate and keeps it humid. Three things break that:
- Time. Even capped, water evaporates slowly and pigment settles. Weeks without printing is enough on a dry or warm room.
- Power cut at the wall. If the printer loses power without shutting down through its own button, the head may not park and cap correctly, and the nozzles dry out fast.
- A dirty cap or wiper. Dried ink on the capping station stops it sealing, so the head dries even when parked.
EcoTank and L-series models use a permanent printhead rather than one built into the cartridge, which is why the fix is cleaning rather than replacing a part. It is also why the stakes are higher: a permanently blocked head is a printer-level failure.
Step 1: Read the nozzle check properly
The nozzle check prints a grid of fine lines for each colour. A complete pattern with no gaps means the nozzles are clear and your problem lies elsewhere. Gaps or missing blocks in one colour identify exactly which channel is blocked.
Keep each printed check. Comparing today's against the one before the cleaning is the only reliable way to know whether you are making progress, and it prevents the common trap of running six cleanings in a row on a head that was never going to clear that way.
Step 2: Standard head cleaning
- On the panel, go to Settings › Maintenance › Print Head Cleaning.
- Select the colour group if the printer offers a choice, so you do not clean channels that are already fine.
- Let the cycle finish without interrupting it.
- Wait 15 to 20 minutes. This matters: the solvent needs time to soften dried ink.
- Print another nozzle check and compare it with the previous one.
If the pattern is better but not complete, one more cycle is reasonable. If two cycles produce no change at all, more of the same will not help and you should move on.
Step 3: Power cleaning
Power cleaning, sometimes shown as Power Ink Flushing, forces a much larger volume of ink through the head. It clears blocks that ordinary cleaning cannot, at a real cost.
- Make sure every tank is filled to at least the upper line; power cleaning consumes a substantial amount of ink and can fail part-way if a tank runs low.
- Go to Settings › Maintenance › Power Cleaning and confirm.
- The cycle takes several minutes and the printer will be noisy. Do not switch it off.
- Wait, then print a nozzle check.
Step 4: Rest before escalating
Between attempts, leave the printer switched on and idle for several hours or overnight. Ink sitting against a dried block slowly dissolves it, and a nozzle check the next morning is frequently better than the one you took immediately after cleaning. This costs nothing and resolves a meaningful share of partial blocks.
Step 5: Manual cleaning
Only if the steps above have failed, and accepting that this involves the printer's internals.
Cleaning the capping station
- Turn the printer off with its own power button and unplug it.
- Open the lid and gently slide the carriage away from its parked position at the right-hand side.
- Look for the rubber cap and the wiper blade where the head rests. Dried ink here prevents sealing.
- Clean them with a cotton bud lightly dampened with distilled water or a purpose-made printhead cleaning solution.
- Do not flood the area, and let it dry before closing.
Soaking the nozzle plate
- Place a folded piece of kitchen towel, dampened with warm distilled water or printhead cleaning fluid, on the capping station.
- Move the carriage back over it so the nozzle plate rests on the damp pad.
- Leave for a few hours, or overnight for a stubborn block.
- Remove the towel, plug the printer in, power it on, and run one cleaning cycle followed by a nozzle check.
Preventing it happening again
This is a problem of disuse, and prevention is trivially cheap compared with the cure.
- Print one small colour page every week. A single page using all channels keeps the nozzles wet. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar.
- Always power off with the printer's own button. That lets the head park and cap. Never switch it off at a wall socket or a timer plug.
- Leave it plugged in. Many models run a short maintenance cycle on a schedule.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. Warmth accelerates evaporation at the nozzle plate.
- Do not let tanks run dry. Air drawn into the head is far harder to clear than dried ink.

On mid-range models the total frequently exceeds the price of a current replacement.
Two things are worth checking before you write it off.
