DYMO LabelWriter Setup and Fixes: DYMO Connect, 550 Labels and Windows 11

To set up a DYMO LabelWriter, install DYMO Connect for Desktop from dymo.com before plugging the printer in, then connect it by USB, load a roll, and choose the matching label in the software. The LabelWriter 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL need DYMO Connect and only work with genuine DYMO labels; the older 450 series and 4XL also run with the legacy DYMO Label software.

DYMO Connect or DYMO Label software: which do you need?

DYMO Connect for Desktop is DYMO's current free program for designing and printing labels on Windows and macOS. DYMO Label Software, often called DLS and last released as version 8.7.x, is the older program many offices still use because their templates were built in it years ago. Which one you need depends on the printer.

DYMO's compatibility chart on dymo.com is the final word, especially for less common models. The LabelWriter 400 Turbo is a legacy model, so check the chart before assuming current software supports it on Windows 11 or a recent Mac.

Our advice: if every printer you own is a 450 series or newer, use DYMO Connect only. Keep DLS only if you depend on an old template or a program that prints through it. Why does the LabelWriter 550 only work with DYMO labels?

The 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL use what DYMO calls Automatic Label Recognition. Genuine DYMO LW rolls for these printers carry a small recognition chip that tells DYMO Connect the label size, the label type and how many labels are left. DYMO states that the 550 series works only with authentic DYMO LW labels, and that the printers won't recognize other labels.

In practice, that means:

• There's no setting in DYMO Connect or on the printer that turns the check off.
• Genuine rolls cost more than generic ones, so each label costs more than on a printer that accepts any label stock.
• In return, DYMO Connect picks the right label size by itself and warns you before a roll runs out, which cuts down on wasted labels and misprints.

We won't point you to chip adapters, respooled rolls or firmware tricks. They're unreliable, DYMO doesn't support them, and DYMO's warranty doesn't cover faults caused by non-DYMO labels. If running cost matters more to you than convenience, the honest options are to keep using an older 450-series printer if you have one, or to choose a different printer: a Rollo or MUNBYN thermal printer for 4 x 6 shipping labels, or one of the alternatives in our best label printer guide.

How do I install DYMO Connect on Windows 11?

1. If the LabelWriter's USB cable is already plugged in, unplug it. Installing the software first avoids Windows grabbing the printer with the wrong driver.
2. Download DYMO Connect for Desktop for Windows from the downloads page on dymo.com. Use DYMO's own site rather than a download portal.
3. Run the installer and accept the prompts. It installs the program and the LabelWriter drivers, plus a DYMO web service that some websites and programs use to print.
4. Plug in the printer's power, connect the USB cable directly to the computer, and wait for Windows to finish setting it up.
5. Open DYMO Connect. Your printer should appear in the printer list, and on a 550-series printer the loaded label shows up automatically.
6. Print a test label.

How do I install DYMO Connect on a Mac?

1. Download the macOS version of DYMO Connect for Desktop from dymo.com and open the installer package.
2. Allow any permission prompts. If the installer is blocked, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and look for an Open Anyway button.
3. Connect the LabelWriter by USB. On a Mac with only USB-C ports, use a single good-quality cable or adapter rather than a chain of dongles.
4. Open System Settings › Printers & Scanners. The LabelWriter usually appears by itself. If not, click Add Printer, Scanner or Fax, select it, and make sure the DYMO driver is chosen in the Use menu rather than a generic driver.
5. Open DYMO Connect, select the printer and print a test label.

Which label size should I choose?

On a 550-series printer, DYMO Connect reads the roll and chooses the size for you. On a 450 or 4XL, you have to select the label that matches the roll, because the printer can't tell what's loaded. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason labels skip or print in the wrong place. The part number on the label box is the easiest way to match it:

• 30252 Address: 1-1/8 x 3-1/2 in, the standard mailing and return address label.
• 30256 Shipping: 2-5/16 x 4 in, the largest common size for the standard-width 450 and 550 models.
• Extra large shipping, 4 x 6 in: for the 4XL and 5XL only. 1744907 is the long-standing part number for the 4XL; for a 5XL, check that the roll is listed as compatible with it.

The standard-width 450 and 550 can't print a 4 x 6 shipping label. If you ship parcels regularly, you need a 4XL, a 5XL or a dedicated 4 x 6 thermal printer. When printing from programs other than DYMO Connect, such as Word or a browser, choose the same label in the paper size list; the DYMO driver usually lists sizes by part number and name.

How do I print address and shipping labels?

Address labels

1. In DYMO Connect, start a new label for your label size and add an address field, or pick one of the address layouts.
2. Type or paste the address. For a mailing list, use the data import option to bring in names from an Excel or CSV file, then match the columns to the fields on the label.
3. Print one label and check it before printing the whole batch.

4 x 6 shipping labels on a 4XL or 5XL

1. In your shipping platform, such as eBay, Etsy, Shopify, Pirate Ship or a carrier's site, choose the 4 x 6 label format rather than a letter-size sheet.
2. Open the PDF and print it to the LabelWriter with the paper size set to the 4 x 6 extra large shipping label and scaling at 100% or actual size.
3. If the label prints sideways, change the orientation in the print dialog rather than editing the PDF.

Some websites and desktop programs print to DYMO printers through the web service DYMO Connect installs. If one of them says it can't find a DYMO printer while DYMO Connect itself prints fine, restart the computer so the service starts again, and check that security software isn't blocking it. What if the LabelWriter isn't found or shows as offline?

1. Connect the printer directly to a USB port on the computer, and try a different USB cable if you have one.
2. Unplug the printer's power and USB cable for 30 seconds, then reconnect them.
3. Open the printer's queue and cancel everything in it. Our guide to clearing a stuck print queue helps if jobs won't delete.
4. Restart the Print Spooler: press the Windows key and R, type services.msc, right-click Print Spooler and choose Restart.
5. If Device Manager shows the LabelWriter under Other devices or as an unknown device, right-click it, choose Update driver, browse your computer, and point it to C:\Program Files (x86)\DYMO\DYMO Connect\Drivers, the folder DYMO gives for DYMO Connect on 64-bit Windows.
6. Delete duplicate printers, such as a copy with "(Copy 1)" in its name, so programs don't send labels to a queue that no longer works.

Why are labels skipping, feeding extra or printing blank?

• Wrong label selected (450 and 4XL). If the software expects a different size, the printer feeds past the gap. Select the label that matches the part number on the roll.
• Roll loaded incorrectly. On most LabelWriters the labels feed from underneath the roll, and the spool guide should sit snugly against the roll's edge. Reload it, then press the form-feed button to line up the next label.
• Non-DYMO labels in a 550-series printer. The printer won't recognize them. Fit a genuine DYMO roll.
• Dirty print head or sensor. Label dust and adhesive build up over time. DYMO sells cleaning cards made for LabelWriter print heads.
• Blank labels. Usually a roll that isn't direct thermal, labels damaged by heat or sunlight, or a job sent at the wrong size so the content lands off the label. Our page on DYMO LabelWriter printing blank labels goes through these in order.

How do I fix DYMO driver conflicts on Windows?

A driver conflict shows up as a printer that worked yesterday and now errors, prints from one program but not another, or appears twice. The usual causes are DLS and DYMO Connect installed together, a driver replaced by Windows Update, or old queues left over from a previous printer.

1. Unplug the LabelWriter's USB cable.
2. Remove every DYMO printer in Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners.
3. Uninstall DYMO Connect and DYMO Label software in Settings › Apps › Installed apps.
4. Press the Windows key and R, run printui /s /t2, and remove any leftover DYMO drivers, choosing to remove the driver and its package.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Install the latest DYMO Connect, then reconnect the printer and print a test label.
7. If you still need DLS for a 450 and an old template, reinstall it last and test both programs. If the 550 misbehaves afterward, keep DLS on a separate computer.
