The MFC-J6945DW was the 2019 INKvestment Tank flagship of the tabloid inkjet range, with two paper trays, duplex scanning and a 3.7-inch touchscreen. It shipped with around a year of LC3037 ink and accepts the 6,000-page LC3039 black. It was widely adopted by home-based designers and small offices and many remain in daily use. The ink absorber pad is its long-term weak point, surfacing as the 'Unable to Print 46' message.

Setting up the Brother MFC-J6945DW

Connect Ethernet, set tray sizes on the touchscreen, and install the Full Driver & Software Package on Windows for scanning and PC-Fax. Let the initial ink charge run fully. Use Brother Mobile Connect for reservoir ink levels and reordering.

Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the ink cartridges, and load paper in the tray.
Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
Install the setup app. Use Brother's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
