It takes Epson 542 bottles in the US and Canada. The ADF scans one side of each page, so double-sided originals need two passes. Print something at least weekly, because pigment black is the ink most likely to show gaps after a few idle weeks.

Canon PIXMA G7020: for bigger families and more cardstock

Canon's top home-office MegaTank adds capacity: a 250-sheet cassette plus a 100-sheet rear tray, which is the better path for cardstock and craft paper. It also has automatic duplex, a 35-sheet ADF, fax, Ethernet and a GI-20 ink set with a pigment black. At roughly 23 lb it is the heaviest pick here, so give it a permanent spot. Epson EcoTank ET-2850 and ET-2800: the simple options

Take a family printing about 250 pages a month through the school year, roughly a third of them in color: around 2,500 to 3,000 pages a year. The figures below are rough estimates at typical coverage and exclude paper. Bold color worksheets and full-page coloring sheets use far more ink.

Scanning schoolwork into a portfolio

1. Set up a folder structure first, such as one folder per child with a subfolder per school year or subject.
