Epson EcoTank ET-2850 vs ET-4800: Is the ADF and Fax Worth the Extra?

The Epson EcoTank ET-2850 and ET-4800 sit within a few pounds or dollars of each other, and Epson's own marketing does a poor job of explaining what separates them. It comes down to one trade: the ET-2850 gives you automatic duplex printing, the ET-4800 gives you an automatic document feeder and a fax modem. Neither has both, and you will find the missing feature irritating if it happens to be the one you needed.

Specifications side by side

The ET-4800 also has an Ethernet port, which the ET-2850 lacks. That is a small but genuinely useful difference if your printer sits near a router or a switch and you would rather not rely on wireless at all.

Running costs: 502 versus 522 ink

Epson uses different bottle families across the EcoTank range, and yields vary noticeably between them.

In practice a mixed colour page costs roughly 0.9 to 1.2 cents on either printer. The 502 set has the cheaper black and the more expensive colour; the 522 set is the reverse. If your printing is overwhelmingly black text, the ET-2850's 502 black is the better deal. If you print a lot of colour, the ET-4800's 522 colour bottles last longer.

The duplex versus ADF trade in practice

This is the whole decision, so it is worth being concrete.

Automatic duplex matters when you print. Coursework, reports, recipes, meeting packs, anything long. Halving your paper use is a real saving and manual duplex on a rear-feed printer is genuinely tedious because you must reload the entire stack in the correct orientation.

An ADF matters when you copy or scan. If you regularly duplicate a ten-page form, sign it and post it, lifting the flatbed lid ten times is worse than any duplex inconvenience. The ET-4800's 30-sheet feeder turns that into a single button press.

Who each printer suits

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 if

• You print long documents and want automatic two-sided output.
• You are a student, or printing for one.
• You want the smaller, lighter machine.
• Your black-and-white volume is high and you want the 7,500-page 502 black bottle.
• You have no use for fax.

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4800 if

• You copy or scan multi-page documents regularly.
• You still need a working fax line, which remains common in healthcare, legal and property work.
• You want a wired Ethernet connection.
• You print colour more often than mono.
• Manual duplex is acceptable because you rarely print long documents.

Setup, app and driver experience

Both printers use Epson Smart Panel, which is one of the better manufacturer apps: no account required, accurate tank level display, and direct access to nozzle checks and head cleaning. Setup takes a few minutes and the Wi-Fi Direct fallback works reliably when a router refuses to cooperate.

On a computer, install the Epson driver package plus Epson ScanSmart, which handles multi-page scanning to searchable PDF. On the ET-4800, ScanSmart plus the ADF is a genuinely useful document-digitising combination. Both models support AirPrint and Mopria Print Service.

Known weaknesses and common errors

Both models share the EcoTank platform and therefore share its faults.

The permanently installed printhead is the main risk. Left unused for months, nozzles dry and require cleaning cycles that consume meaningful ink. Print a colour page weekly and the problem effectively disappears. If banding appears, work through streaks and lines before assuming a hardware fault.

Regional availability and model names

• United States and Canada: ET-2850 with Epson 502 bottles and ET-4800 with Epson 522 bottles.
• United Kingdom and Ireland: Epson sells the ET-2850 under the same number, using Epson 102 or 104 bottles depending on the exact variant, and the ET-4810 in place of the ET-4800, also using 104-series ink.
• Australia and New Zealand: the ET-2850 and ET-4810 are the local listings, with 502-equivalent bottles carrying European numbering.

Check the number printed on the ink bottle currently in your machine before ordering. Epson's regional ink families are not interchangeable, and the bottle keying prevents cross-filling in most cases.

Scanning quality and workflow

Both use the same class of flatbed CIS scanner at 1200 dpi optical, so a single-page scan looks identical from either machine. The difference is entirely in throughput. Scanning a twenty-page contract on the ET-2850 means twenty lid lifts and twenty page placements, which takes several minutes. The ET-4800 does the same job in one operation while you do something else.

Combined with Epson ScanSmart on a computer, the ET-4800 will produce a searchable, OCR-processed PDF from a stack of paper in a single pass. That is genuinely useful for anyone digitising receipts, invoices or medical paperwork, and it is the reason the ET-4800 remains popular with small practices despite lacking automatic duplex.

One practical note: neither ADF handles thin, creased or stapled originals well. Feed damaged paper on the flatbed instead, or you will spend more time clearing misfeeds than you saved.

Verdict

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 if printing is the main event. Automatic duplex saves paper on every long document and the 502 black bottle is one of the cheapest per-page mono consumables you can buy.

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-4800 if paperwork is the main event. The 30-sheet ADF transforms copying and scanning, the fax modem is still a requirement in several professions, and Ethernet removes an entire category of wireless problems.
