Is the HP DeskJet 4155e right for you?

The DeskJet 4155e is the HP+ version of the 4155 and the most affordable HP printer with a document feeder that also comes with an Instant Ink trial. It is aimed at home offices that need to scan a stack of pages now and then but print too little to justify an OfficeJet. Once HP+ is enabled the printer demands genuine HP 67 ink and an always-on internet connection, which catches out owners who later try a refilled cartridge and see a cartridge-problem error.

Setting up the HP DeskJet 4155e

Setup is through HP Smart with an HP account and the printer must reach the internet to complete HP+ activation. The app's Mobile Fax feature sends faxes through HP's servers rather than a phone line, so there is no fax port to connect. Keep the printer on the 2.4 GHz band and load the ADF face-up with the guides snug against the paper.

1. Unbox and prepare. Remove every piece of shipping tape and packing material, install the ink cartridges, and load paper in the tray.
2. Join your Wi-Fi. Keep the printer close to the router for setup. Most printers only connect to the 2.4GHz band, so if your router broadcasts one merged network name you may need to split the bands temporarily. See our Wi-Fi guide if it will not join.
3. Install the setup app. Use HP's official app rather than a driver you found on a search result — third-party driver sites are the most common source of printer malware.
4. Add the printer. On Windows 11: Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners › Add device. On macOS: System Settings › Printers & Scanners › Add Printer.
5. Print a test page and run a scan if this is an all-in-one, so you find any problem now rather than when you are in a hurry.
